We like our RMW tune and it has been running great on the car for almost 2 years, but I hate to say it, this is going to open a big can of worms. I know both Jan and Hubie and they are both great people to work with. Most people have one or the other tune, not both, so your best bet is to just contact each of them and find out who is going to work best for what you want. In the meantime

Im running a RMW tune. and have no issues with my slightly modifyed car
Batruggers car has more things changed about it and I know for a fact theirs is a daily/track car
You cant beat the price for a custom ecu tune from RMW for 350
I dont know anyone personaly who's running hubies tune
However, I've never seen a bad word about hubie yet.
He seems like excelent people.

This is indouobtedly a question that you will never get a good answer from anybody.

Everyone will recommend the one they used, and with good reason, both are very reputable and are very experienced with the MINI. And both have faithful followers, hence the cautionary responses here thus far.

Jan has a more "in your face" personality on the web but you would never know when meeting him in person, very nice guy. I've never met Hubie personally but I've never read or heard anything that would lead me to think that he's not a nice guy either.

Call both of them, or meet them since they are somewhat close, and you be the judge.

Good luck! Any which way you will get a kick out of a tune.

I recently had Jan/RMW tune our '06 JCW (factory, R53 Supercharged) and I'm a very happy customer. Full write up and Dyno plots here:

JCW with RMW Tune thread

I also have met Hubie several times and Hubie/Mynes also have their own following of fans/happy customers.

Hubie and Jan are both very knowledgeable and I think there is a bit of a rivalry between them (well, maybe actually more of a rivalry between their customers) on NAM.

I can only speak of my experiences with Jan/RMS b/c in the end, I chose to go with Jan because I have known him personally and for a longer time. He has spent a great deal of time talking with me and sharing his insights and knowledge about all things MINI and cars over the years.

The gains he stated upfront before my Tune only and Cam/Header/Tune upgrades were realized, almost to the exact HP predicted ahead of time. There was no inflation of numbers to make a sale. Jan coordinated with Danny at MiniCorsa for me to set the entire process up in a most painless manner. Parts were delivered up to Danny's and the whole installation (Cam, Header, Clutch, some miscellaneous work - suspension bushings, SS Brake lines, brake fluid and coolant flush, etc) were all done in about 8 hours (!!!).

I also chose Jan because after getting the Software only Tune on my Factory JCW, he offered to re-tune for free in the future if I should ever end up getting his RMW Cam, RMW Exhaust Header someday. There were no pressure selling pitches/tactics, and I was very impressed at the amount of time and attention spent on our MINI at the first Software only Tuning session (> 10 pulls, 1 1/2 hours, no rushing).

In talking with Hubie, I also think he is also very knowledgeable and his work is reputed to be excellent also.

I think your time is well spent emailing/talking to both and seeing who you are most comfortable with in the end. Luckily, both tuners are local and very close to/within OC. I think you're MUCH better off with a custom dyno/road tune than any canned software flash/tune. A custom tune will improve your gains over that of just adding some bolt on hardware (pully, intake, exhaust) alone.

Understand that if you're going the Cam and exhaust Header route, you'll likely run into some CEL's and EML's until the final engine Tune software adjustments are fine tuned. That's just what you're likely to have happen when you push the engine and the system as a whole to get those extra ft/lb and HP's out of the engine.

BOTH tuners have had this happen, both have solutions and the know how to fix the problems. Just expect it to happen and accept it as part of the cost of getting more HP and pushing your engine harder.

The final choice is ultimately yours, I'd ask alot of questions, especially about what problems they've had and how they have/will fix them should they come up. I think you'll find both Jan and Hubie to be knowledgeable, honest and very straight forward.

Diversity and competition are great things especially for us consumers living down here in So. Cal. With two such talented tuners driving each other to push out better products and numbers, we as owners can only benefit.

Here's another view...have both of them do it. Flip a coin and have the winner do the first tune and then see if the 2nd guy can do better or worse. Then you can tell us who's the King of the Southern California tuners.
Might cost you extra dough but who cares, this is our hobby.

If you want to kill two birds with one stone you can attend this event. The So Cal. Mini club is putting on a dyno day at Hubie's shop so you could come on by meet some local Mini owners and as well as see how Hubie / Mynes do business. There will be a wide variety of modded cars there so you can get some real world feedback as to what they think worked or didn't work for them . There will also be some dyno tests of a few cars that have been tuned locally which might prove to be interesting . All in all it should be a very entertaining day and could be a good opportunity to gain a ton of knowledge about your Mini.

Randy
M7 Tuning

Event: Club Dyno Day and Potluck and BBQ
Where: ABF Performance ‎ 20521 Teresita Way, Lake Forest, CA
When: 9 AM (until the last MINI is dyno'ed)
Costs: $55 for 3 pulls including air/fuel

Come find out what type of horse-power your MINI has.

ALL SCMM MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO STOP BY EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE DYNO
SCMM and ABF will be sponsoring lunch, so please stop on by and join in on the fun.

I am organizing a club dyno day with Hubie Fuh. It should be lots of fun... plenty of parking.... plenty of space to hang out. There will be some cool trophies and prizes awarded that day and in plenty of categories. We're going to try and make this as fun as possible as well as informative for everyone. This will be another opportunity to bring friends and family and enjoy the great camaraderie this club has to offer.

Food
The Club and ABF will kick in for some food and drinks. However, since we all love food...please feel free to bring some food or tasty beverage along and share with your fellow club members. This will be a very relaxed day, so bring your portable lawn chairs and lots of goodies, kick up your feet and stay awhile. Please post if you're interested in bringing something to share...the more the merrier.

There will also be a special announcement made by DR. FUH that many of you might be interested in (MINI related). Also, come and give support to the Fantasy Racing Team before they head off to Bonneville Salt Flats.

DYNO SIGNUP & INFORMATION
I will be compiling information to be used by each person who wishes to dyno their MINI. My hopes are that the information I collect can be used by everyone in the club, especially those who wish to mod their MINIs. The great thing is that there will be specialists available to review your results and talk to you about them and how you may be able to improve them. This will be free advice.

Please sign up if you would like to participate. The order in which your MINI will be dyno'ed will be in the same order in which you signed up on here. Please include your license plate and color of your MINI so it will be easier to find your MINI on the day.

PLEASE FILL IN THE INFORMATION IN THE ATTACHED FILE AND SEND IT BACK TO ME. Save a copy of the document to your computer and then please email me your copy of the file ~ email: lex@scmm.org. This will help later on when you discuss your results with the specialists as well as with other club members.

It's going to be FUN!

Do you swap your headers out often? What is the purpose of multiple custom headers?

Oh, I didn't mean I have multiple headers, i just have two. The stock one (i kept aside JUST in case) and the custom HEADER me and my friend made. but sometimes each header has different flows then others, so some might have multiple and play around with it. as for me, it was already hard enough just to install one header . But yeah, sorry to confuse you

This is some good advice here. You need to talk to these guys in person, or at least via phone and get your own feel for who you think will provide you with the best product and service for your needs.

Asking a group on NAM who is better, is like asking if you like Coke or Pepsi, Chevy or Ford, 9mm or .40cal, well I think you get the idea.

I personally went with RMW because I was comfortable working with Jan (RMW) and Danny (Minicorsa) who have a good working relationship. Yes Jan can come off strong online and I believe part of this comes from his passion for what he does, but in person he's a professional and respectful man. I've never regretted choosing him as the person to work with my MINI and me, and he's been helpful the whole time, even after I handed him my hard earned dollars.

I am not sure if I will be able to make it to the event but I am going to try as it does look like a good time . My car still has the Vitesse Pro tune on it , I am sure you remember Emile, and it is running fine enough for me at this point in time. Jason did one thing for me at AMVIV which was to lower the temp at which my aux fan came on . In L.A traffic I wanted my fan to come on a bit quicker and not be dependent on running my AC to make that happen. He spent a few min connected to my ECU and bingo it now comes on at 200 degrees every time . Amazing what someone can do when they know what they are doing . Perhaps some of you SCMMers attending the event might want to mention that to him while you are there , works like a charm.
