Drivetrain Best R53 CAI
For the dave.f intake, he does a bit more fabrication and i think he cuts out a good chunk of the front and back of the intake box to use his own fittings.
I used 2 pieces of PVC. One was a coupler, with an OD around 2.75" for the intake to attach to. The other was a section of i think schedule 40 2" pipe, that fit inside the coupler on one end and in the stock intake box on the other end. There was some sanding involved.
Well something like that. It's been a while.

Thanks for the help I figured it out... I used the coupler that you said but I dremeled out a lot of the inside of the coupler. I also used the RU- 1460 but I might try to see if the 1470/1480 fits inside of the box with the set up that I have ...
That Craven speed intake looks huge in there!
Thanks for you help

Great. The 1480 barely fits to be honest. It's in but i wonder if it just barely fitting affects anything. If I connected through the firewall like dave.f's it would make me feel better.

Some advice needed from you Alta/DDM'ers out there.
My car is 90% driven by the wife, so I need something relatively unnoticeable to her (she drives with the radio loud though!), but at the same time gives me the noise I want. In that respect I'm leaning towards the DDM..........confirm/deny!
In addition, for both what I want to know is - can it be transformed back to stock easily if/when I were ever to contemplate selling the car?

I have the DDM and it is fairly loud. People comment that they can hear the bypass valve. The quietest CAI you will find is a JCW intake. It only gets loud after around 3500RPM. Someone please chime in whether this is correct and if this can be installed on a non JCW Cooper S.
The DDM is completely reversible installation, however.

Hi guys, i make a copy of the Dave f Hybrid here in England. Standard top box, 75 m/m lth of 60m/m dia. alloy tubing pressed into the existing pipe work attatch a K & N RU3190 with rubber spacer as the RU 3190 has a 70m/m internal dia. this is the exact filter used in the Dave F. Then cut a 68m/m hole in the bulk head end of the box and fit a lth of plastic tubing I use plastic down pipe from a stardard guttering systemfixed with Tiger seal on the inside. then cut 68m/m hole in the couling for the tubing to draw more cold air. sounds fantastic and hear that charger whine.
$125 for the ALTA CAI 2.0 from speedelement.com http://www.speedelement.com/index.ph...mart&Itemid=38
I was going to get the kit with the silicone tube, but they are on back order as ALTA is redesigning the tube.
Big improvement over my filthy OEM filter. I was suprised that the box doesn't completely seal the filter away from the hot engine bay air though.

I updated my intake from Alta V2 to Dinan last week. I will say both of them is very good performance. the only reason why I swap it because Alta is too loud for me when i driving on the long trip . So i will vote Dinan is the best for r53 because cost is cheaper than other and the intake noise is just right..that is my 0.2 opinion.
Yeah, i do think the JCW, Dinan, and dave.f style homemade intakes are the "best" BUT in reality it's not all that much better than the others. So the dave.f homemade style wins on cost if you have the time to mess with things.

Cravenspeed Return of the CAI!! little whistle, lots of sucking sounds and sweet supercharger whine. Like a good Cinemax Movie!!! Honestly it sounds so good I almost get embarrassed spooling it up with pedestrians walking around Chicago!
Bought a used Mini Madness CAI from the NAM classifieds awhile back. For $110 shipped with the cowl mod, I couldn't pass it up. Finished things off with a red Samco induction hose.
I noticed more power with my exhaust, but the sound was the best part. Plus the PO cut the bottom out of the OE airbox, so I pretty much had no choice but to get an intake.
Chicagoans are deaf to car horns. The supercharger works as a better tool to warn/scatter sheeple crossing State Street. >:3

So, since I am on a budget i am going to do this for about $15 bucks and some scrap 2.5" pipe. I found a 2.5" cone filter on Ebay that should be at my house tomorrow or Monday. My friend at work had some scrap 2.5" O.D. pipe about 3-4" long.
I am thinking i can take off the top part of my R53 air box and use the 2.5" pipe to sleeve in the OEM intake pipe. And the other end i will attach the Ebay 2.5" I.D. cone filter ($15 bucks shipped comes with silicon connector and clamp). Then i will mount a metal tab into the clamp of the filter then mount to the bottom part of the OEM air box to secure the filter.
I will post pictures once I am done. Should work in theory
i already test fitted the 2.5" pipe inside the OEM intake pipe....so i am half way there!!
