I like the sound of the borla. Many of the others are just a little too import tuner crazy for my taste. Any of these new systems have a nice mellow sound and make real h.p. without costing $700.00 or more.

otherwise for quiet one..go borla..

I think NRP is in the ballpark price-wise. It makes decent power (I believe more than the Borla) and is quite mellow unless you floor it. Even then I don't think it's supposed to be that loud - but it sounds cool.

i got an nrp system from http://www.hillsideimports.com for $575. it has a nice, refined sound. someone else on this board has the scorpion system & says it's not overly loud. it was going for <$500 last time i checked.
best fishes - bodinski.

minifletch, You might also research the Scorpion Exhaust from Bavarian Autosport.
I been running it for a couple of months now and am very happy with it. Great quality item good sound (not too loud but louder than stock), Stainless Steel, and nice oval Tips(90mmx76mm) and $549.00.(I got mine on sale for $494.00, I couldn't resist a deal like that)
There were some great pictures of it posted at one time. As far as HP gains I am not sure, I have the ALTA Pulley, ALTA Air Intake, and then added the Scorpion so it's hard to tell, but the combination sure sounds good together. Good Hunting, Itzamazn

Borla Race Perfect sound...even wife thinks it's not loud. Borla Street would be too quiet even for her and she's not a motor head type.

OK, I'm biased. Think FLOW....Magnaflow. The price seems to be coming down too. I paid $100 more + shipping about a year ago for my system. Check out this, the price is getting more reasonable E-Bay

This is a good start, but try to check them all out in person.Exhaust videos

Good luck

Not sure if this is a possibility but the ss exhaust system that comes with the JCW upgrade proiveds a deeper, broader exhaust note, not necessarily louder, but definately richer in tone.

I just got a Quicksilver exhaust installed on my MCS, and it's perfect for me:

20 lbs. weight savings versus stock.
Throaty sound, obviously not stock, but not superloud.
No annoying drone on road trips.
Claims to add 7-15 hp.
27 year warranty--Stainless steel.
Easy to install.

Pricey, though. Lists at $799 through Mini-Madness, although I organized a group buy through
Mini2, and got it shipped w/ no hassle for $675 plus freight.

Watch your installed price for the Borla race but in my opinion after hearing a few options and in the price range you mentioned- Borla street! not-race is the way to go. (Sorry for the error)

Most of the others aren't as good, too loud or too expensive.

Get a chance to hear borla race in person. It's good for just a bit more than stock. it's usually easy to find local installers that will do it in my area-maybe yours too.
JCW is nice but costs $6000 plus other parts.
I have Quicksilver and it is great but too much $$$
UUC is nice but too much $$$

and i say borla street > borla race

I have to disagree. If it is a mellow sound that you want (I assume it is b/c that's what you stated), stay away from race anything. The race Borla will certainly be too loud for you. The street Borla sounds right up your alley.

Why!?!?!

Get the Borla Race. Sure, it is loud compared to stock. Think of it this way, when you drive down the road and you've got a standard Borla on you are saying to whoever hears it, "I kinda like my MINI. You can sort of hear it when I pass." Now, if you've got a Borla Race, with the great looking tips and you drive down the road you tell everyone, "Yes! i LOVE my MINI. Listen, there is more than just cute to this car."

On a MINI, or a BMW, or Porsche, or Ferrari, an exhaust system almost tells everyone you love the car and you love the performance aspect of it. You tell everyone you enjoy the rawness of driving and the sensations that go along with it. Why only sort of tell people this? This isn't any Honda. People don't laugh at you for having a loud car, they stare at you with interest.

Sorry for the error- meant to type Borla street- I corrected it in my original. But my old age fingers typed Race- subliminal message must have influenced me.

So for those totally confused.
Borla has two models of Cooper S cat back exhausts.
Both normally about the same price and one much more popular for being easy on the ears and just a bit more exhaust than stock- and that is the Borla "street"- it is the standard version. This is the one I meant to recommend that is just a bit louder than stock.
On sale for a limited time at $699.95 until the end of Sept.

And for those who don't like that "street" version, because it needs more guts/loudness/ and slightly more power then
there is the high performance version-Borla Sport or "Race" for $779.95

I believe Helix sells the Race for the cheapest price. Call Eric, or take a look at the website - http://www.helix13.com .

Hope that helps!

For the moment $669.54 plus shipping at Helix
I did find other sources within $5 but they are not MCO sponsors.

Everything is relative with relationship to the buyer.
Here is what I would pay for a Borla street installed-
In my area one of the many exhaust shops will do it for $900 (everything included) or
As above- $670 parts, $100-150 for installation, $80 for shipping. $850 to 900!
So much for getting a bargain.
