Drivetrain CAI that's not to loud.
CAI that's not to loud.
Looking to add a CAI but wanted something not to loud or obnoxious. I know, I know.. that's half the fun but I'm adding my Invidia next week and don't want to over do it on the volume. Just want something to let her breathe better. Any suggestions?
I was in the same boat your in a few weeks ago. I went with the JCW intake and put a high flow filter from Mini Madness. It sounds perfect! Not noisy at all. Sounds stock until you reaaly get on then you hear a little of the turbo. Just what I was looking for. Hope that helps.
On the 08 MCS with JCW Stage 1, I hardly hear my intake compared to the exhaust. Loudness unfortunately depends more on your personal tastes so the only thing I can suggest is to listen to as many different intake/exhaust combinations to see which one suits you the best. Make sure you listen to it under boost, perhaps 3500-5000 rpms, that is where the sounds are loudest. Had a Lotus Elise with the sport exhaust and an open cold air intake. Needed to wear ear plugs in the car on the highway because of the noise.
I unsually find many different cars/modifications to look at and listen to at one of the BMWCCA events. The owners there are always seem willing to share information...
I concur with many opinions expressed here already, JCW is fairly conservative and I recommend it.

I don't get it

During acceleration, more noise comes from the rear of the car and than from the front. You can hear some intake noise but it is not as loud as the exhaust.
Derosi you said "With my JCW Stage 1 tuning kit with the stock paper cone filter I do not hear my turbo or intake at all."
I have the stock JCW intake so what you said is almost exactly similar to my post. I am not comparing different filters which you may be ... I do not understand what you don't understand.

Fairly Conservative
Fairly is an understatement. I have had the DDM Works Street Intake. That sounds awesome but some may say it is to loud. I have had the Stock Airbox with Alta Panel Filter and you can barely hear it if you strain to listen. The JCW Airbox for the stage 1 tuning kit with the stock filter does not make any noise at all that I can hear and definately less than the stock box with Alta Panel Filter. To me conservative for a tuning kit would be somewhere between an open intake and the stock box. The R53 had the intake with the flap that would open and release sound above 4500 that was sweet.
The only question I have is will the madness filter make it louder than with the stock paper cone filter. By louder will I then hear the Diverter/Blow off type sound.

I think ThumperMCS may be right. It stands to logic that the main loudness difference may be between open versus closed sytems. There may be some differences in closed systems but I cannot really tell you having not heard the Madness filter myself.
I still recommend you go somewhere with lots of Minis and listen to it to see what you can live with on a daily basis.

Derosi,
I may have a way to answer this question for you. It can be done at home in your garage, preferably with an open garage door.
It is based on the premise that ThumperMCS put forth that less restriction = louder. The method is also based on the well tested scientific method used by scientists etc all around the world.
1. Based on the JCW factory CAI with the JCW paper filter. Start the car and rev it to 5000 rpm. Listen carefully as this is your baseline. You could road test this if you want a more accurate picture. A noise meter will also help.
2. Remove the JCW paper filter and put back the JCW box only. Repeat. This is experiment 1.
3. Take out the JCW box and put an open CAI in and repeat for experiment 2. If you don't have this, just skip and go to step 4.
4. Remove all the CAI stuff and repeat. This is experiment number 3. This is the loudest it can be according to the premise.
One caveat, am not sure if the MAP sensor will have a problem.
Now you know where you lie on the loudness scale and where you want to place your money.
Another couple of caveats. Do not run this too long w/o the filter. Am not I sure I will do this to my car but I do not need the loudness question answered.

would cutting a whole in JCW Help
Would cutting a hole in the JCW Airbox increase the diverter/Blow off sound. Would it negatively effect the airflow or change the way the ECU is reading. It would seem it would have no other effect other than to increase noise and the filter would get a little dirtier earlier but I could get a alta or madness filter that could be cleaned regularly so that would not be an issue..
If anyone has a Idea if this may work without negatives please let me know. I was thinking to drill the hole or holes in the back bottom portion of the airbox so it would not even be seen.

I've had the audible pleasure of having open filtered Eaton supercharged WOT whine for the last nine years (2 SVT Lightnings, 1 Harley Davidson F150) and the DDM intake I bought and installed on my R56 is comparable in noise.
It isn't for someone wanting quiet and the verdict is still out since I'm getting used to the turbo PSSSSSSSH sound. NO need for a BOV whatsoever.
Spoolin it,
Bob
