Need Clutch help ???

Hi NAM members,

Once I put the car on dyno I smiled clutch burning and the performance shop told me your clutch may need to change. I took appointment with the service and they will check it.

What is the best clutch for 200 WHP ? I have browsed www.revolutionmini.com and www.minicorsa.com site I could not understand which one is the best for my car

Can anybody show to me the installation for the clutch ?

Thanks.

ACT HD Street Clutch

There is an article in MC2 Magazine, January February 2008 issue, that covers this subject. Mat Richer aka Dr. Obnxs replaced his clutch with a ACT HD clutch, flywheel and pressure plate kit. I know he has upwards of 200 horse power in his mimi. The article is on pages 60 through 63.

I have a Clutch Masters FX-300 w/lightweight flywheel and I love this set-up. Jan of RMW recommended this combo for higher horsepower mini's

If you think ripping the whole front end of your car out "Easy" then yes. You have to pull the forward subframe and front clip then the tranny! Lot's involved!

I personally wouldn't say it was hard, just time consuming. It also helps having a mechanic for a friend. I found the worst part of the job was bleeding the clutch, we tried the bently method with no luck. Onasled was kind enough to give me a new method which worked perfectly. Do a search there are two excellent how-to's on the subject.

I agree that it is not hard. Very time consuming. Make sure you know where every bolt goes back in! You don't want to end up with extra parts!

I agree, spare parts are always a bad thing.

Parts(I think he meant hardware) that never found there way home.

I mixed up the M6 bolts for the SC inlet duct with the exhaust manifold heat shield. I quickly noticed they were not in there proper holes. So yeah, the best method is to bag and tag all the hardware.

Really, you want to look at torque capacities

HP isn't what's relevant for clutches.... The ACT is a good set up, but they don't have all the "flavors" that clutchmasters offers. Give any of the good shops a call and see what they say about where your car is at, where it will be (in terms of ultimate mods) and how you drive, and they will steer you well...

Thanks Jermy I think the installation was very difficult

Have you felt the flywheel + clutch is better than the original one ?

It really just depends on your long term goals for the car, I knew I wanted a RMW set-up so I opted for the best street clutch I could get. Act, Spec and Clutchmasters were all in the running but I got the best deal through Jan on the Clutchmasters set-up. And as far as the flywheel, maybe I'm way wrong on this, but It was my understanding that anytime you replace a clutch you should have the mating surface of the flywheel machined. Again from what I've read, Mini flywheels cannot be machined due to thickness issues and so a new flywheel is required. I figured if I'm going to get a new one anyway I might as well get a lightweight one.

The installation is time consuming(for us 1st timers) but there's no real special tools or anything needed to expose the pressure plate, clutch disc and flywheel. You'll just need the usual assortment of sockets(E8 torx for pressure plate bolts) extensions, universal joints, torque wrenches, and smiles.

The CM flywheel and CM FX200 has been good to me. I'm 300 miles past the break in now and it has allowed the motor to become very rev responsive. FW mass going from 26-27 lbs down to 12-13lbs is such a great thing for our dinky little 1.6L motors. The CM FX200 solid kevlar disc is appropriate for what I do with my MINI(will autocross and track day a few times per year). All in all I'm a happy MCS driver.

What type of racing? Drag, autocross or track? If it's track you'll be more concerned about heat build up and may want to go for at least a stage 2 plus or stage 3(segmented or paddle disc arrangement). Have fun shopping!

I'd go with the FX300 too. I have the FX400 and it's a bit extreme for the street.

If I'm not mistaken, the FX 200 has less holding ability than the FX 300 however the FX 200 should be a little easier to drive on the street. I've found the FX 300 a little more difficult to drive on the street than the stock clutch, I'm not saying it's hard, just the engagement is very sharp and reqires a bit to get used to.

The FX200 should work fine for the street Luys. It's working out fine for me.

I would PM guys like Spdfreak and Rustyboy155 for more of their views on the FX300 and FX400 respectively.

E-Mail would be better. Given the recent events on NAM (a hair away from a complete dictatorship) I'm probably going to be taking a sabbatical from this site.
