Here's a shot of Way's hand on the heatshield with the wrap under it. This is post-install --- the turbo had gotten "down" to about 180 degrees and then I allowed it to come back up to a nominal 216-225. The shield area was around 100 degrees.

The cover will start to pick up and radiate heat from its other metal to metal contacts, but the overall scorching heat is contained.
This pic is worth a couple thousand words !! Very nice and proves the point. My turbo runs hot enough that the scoop is warping and the hood is bleeding yellow stuff (can not think of the name of the sealer material, long day...) on the front bumper ....

No worries Call. I was just referring to the cost of exhaust wrap rated at the same temps for less $50.

LOL same here. I saw them debuted at AMVIV and contemplated buying one then but seeing that little demo pic sealed the deal.

Quick follow up observations.
The bonnet never gets "hot" anymore.
Overall temps never spike. The engine takes longer to get stone-cold but never hits those peaky-high redzone temperatures first.
Wife is actually pleased with the purchase; remarkable.

So did I. But most Mini mods are.
But if you get a kit, you have to futz around to make it fit. This thing, on the other hand, is an extremely snug/perfect fit and the OE shield goes right back on.
If you've got more time than money, get a kit and try to make it work... ...I'm all in favor of ghetto-rigging if you've got the know-how and ambition.

Arnbut is exactly right. Remember that when you buy a part that's specific to a car, the materials are not the only thing you're paying for. You're paying for the R&D, testing, fitting, etc. that went into developing the product, as well as the setup cost for the manufacturing.

If you want to get a universal wrap kit and DIY it, go for it, but if you're as obsessive with your cars as I am about mine, you'll probably end up getting the real deal at some point down the line (and that will lead to a final price of $225 + the time taken to install/remove the universal one when you realize that you aren't happy with the way it looks. )

I am sorry, but anyone that has taken a MINI turbo apart will know that there is no room to do a traditional wrap like a turbo in a race engine. The area in the mini is so compact that it is not funny and the WMW wrap installs rather easy, fits perfect and can be used even without the retaining wires since the factory shield goes by in very snug and hold it all together.

BTW, those that go to install the WMW wrap will notice smoke after install/run. That is normal as the wrap needs to burn off some of the excess chemical materials

I'd offer to be the guinea pig, but that would knock the car out of STX, so I'll have to live vicariously through you, Mozza My guess is Way will wait until it comes out to see if MINI addressed the issue. If people are melting hood scoops with the current baby turbo, it's big brother will start melting hoods

This is the one the best money I have ever spent !

Took little bit to install since the stupid BMW engineers never have to work on what they design !!!! 6, 1 inch long bolts to hold on a shield that weighs grams and a 1 mm thick .... go figure !?!? Good thing the blood in the engine bay will burn off quickly

Once I got the heat shield off (I strongly suggest removing the sensor, since the edges of the shield will cut the sensor cable if not really careful) only took about 20 minutes to install and run the safety wires and verify the waste gate rod was not binding on anything and then another 20 minutes to get the shield back on (HINT, if wrap the blanket on nice and snug and keep it snug with the safety wire, the shield will go back on easy).

Note: Heat shield bolts are 10mm and the sensor is 22mm

Takes about 2 hours of good solid heat to bake the new wrap so it stops smoking. Take another couple hours for the smell to go away

any one try using their scoop area for a BBQ? It is 97 right now in Portland so the idea just came to mind.
