It is a serious PIA, the two front bolts are a nightmare to put back in. Thank god for ratcheting box end wrenches... and no thanks for the large hands and forearms... All in all I recall it being roughly a 15 min task to get the bolts back, 15 horrible moments of pain.

1 Make sure it is cold, ONLY way to do it easy

2 put the front 2 bolts in first, that will make it a little easier.

But overall about a 15-20min job

Alright,

Finally got around to installing, here are some pics to help people that might still be having problems. As has been said before, let the car COMPLETELY cool down before you work.

My directions don't involve removing the O2 sensor. Some prefer to remove it, but it's not necessary. If you want to remove it, it's 22mm.

Here's an overview of what you'll be removing. No one mentioned an 8mm bolt but the right one was 8 and all the others were 10mm.

The top three bolts are no problem. The one on the left might be easier to access by moving the circled connector bracket to the side. It's held in place by a 10mm bolt as well.

A bit out of focus, but there's the 8mm bolt on the right side that must come out.

Once the bolts are out you can work the heat shield up and out of the way. Removing the 02 sensor makes it easier, but is not necessary.

Once that's off, put the wrap on the turbo. Loop the retaining wires around the turbo housing and secure it with the rivets on the turbo wrap. Use the wires to pull the wrap snug around the turbo, secure the ends and cut off any excess retaining wire.

The most annoying part of the install (though still not too bad) was getting the heat shield to fit back on. Although it's not to difficult, the circled area is a bit¢h.

Now that you have the heat shield back on put back anything else you moved/removed.

Oh yeah and it will smoke a lot. But that's ok!

I haven't driven much this weekend, but it's immediately noticeable how much less radiant heat is present. Great mod!

Josh,
Great install pics, man! Really looks like a no-brainer. With these pics, and the technical comments of the obviously knowledgeable Morbius, this is my next mod! Thanks to both of you!

We ran the two R56's side by side on Saturday and I hit them with my infrared thermometer and ran with a probe under the bonnet. The results were about what you'd expect.
The temps on the bonnet were 20-30 degrees lower on my car with the wrap at each stop.
Temps under the bonnet on my car ran a maximum of 2 degrees above ambient (while moving) and a maximum of 4 degrees above ambient on the stock set-up.
We both intentionally ran high rpm's to get the motors hot; speeds were in the warp-10 zone. Outdoor ambient temps were high 60's to low 70's.

Yes; it was a great day to motor...

Are you saying there was only a 2 deg difference between the wrap and no wrap?

While moving forward and air freely circulating, yes ---- that's at the air intake area. I didn't have the resources to get any reliable data for water or turbo temps while moving so I measured the next most relevant point.

Bear in mind that "only" 2 degrees represents a 100% higher temperature on the stock set-up --- and it wasn't an area that was in need of significant improvement to begin with.

Turbo Wrap and CAI install

I installed the Way turbo wrap last night and the DDM Street CAI this morming. A few observations worth sharing.
-If you only have a few minutes, wait and do the turbo wrap later. It is a royal pain to access the bolts, but an easy install otherwise. joshk has some pictures of an install in this thread that I can add a few thoughts to. His second picture shows a bracket that interfers with removing one of the bolts. It is held on with one bolt and can be moved out of the way just by backing the bolt out a few turns.
-My shield was held on by 6 bolts (not 5) and all were 10 mm.
-An O2 sensor socket is helpful. $7+-.
-The wrap is a pretty good fit. Im am sure making it was like making a pair of pants for a spider. I suggest using the supplied wire to wrap around the turbo a few times to try to get as much of the wrap to make direct contact as you can.
-The Heat shield reinstall wasn't as bad as the removal.
-I used a piece of cardboard as a "shoe horn" when sliding my hand between the turbo and the front grill to keep the sharp parts from cutting my hand. I started doing this about half way. Start sooner.
-It will smoke some.
-The area directly above the turbo on the bonnet is cooler to the touch.
-The heat shield is still hot, beware.
The DDM install was simple. As an aside, it came well packaged, and the instructions were very clear. The fit was almost like a factory a part. The materials and quality of the build were first rate.
I also removed the factory hood scoop grill. The idea being to get more cool air and get rid of some heat.
I will take a spin later to see how it feels.
BTW mine is a July 08 build.

The smoke

...is part of the "break in" of the wrap. It stops in a few miles or so.

perfectly normal! it's the coating that's inside the wrap that smokes as it shrinks onto the turbo charger, no worries, mine smoked for about 5 min as it was sitting there running, then was good to go, and love the performance!

Wondering if you've been to the dealer since installing the turbo wrap? If so, did they give you a hard time about it?

I installed mine on Monday and was at the dealer on Thursday. No issues and I also had installed a CAI Streets with RAM Scoop. The scoop dropped out at the dealer and they reattached it for me. Poor design using the existing plastic push clamps that held the original scoop heat shield. The dealer even installed my Forge Intercooler Reasonator delete hose.

Thank you.
Review sounds about right. I have one with a CAI and have removed the scoop grill. Made sense to me to get cooler air to the CAI.

Just installed the wrap and....

SON OF A *****!!!

no problem... and my heat shield had 6-10mm bolts holding it on. I, too, removed the O2 sensor. getting the shield back on wasn't bad, it was the bottom bolts...WOW, what a royal pain. I finally jacked up the car and went for the last one from underneath. This is the one to your right as you face the engine.

Can't wait to drive it to see how much cooler the hood scoop feels...

Well I am impressed I must say. Cooler is an understatement...
I should've installed this a year ago.

What an improvement!!!
