I still don't understand how these cars will pass smog here in California . My gosh, they say my Alta intake wont pass . PM if you have any info. to share .
They each have their merits. While the turbo only route will eventually provide the highest level of PEAK HP, the Rotrex is going to have a much more "Streetable" curve.

Did you see where this car is making power? It's all in the upper (4000+ rpm's) power band. Great for the track, or if you drive around in 3rd gear all day, but on the street, having 75 HP until 4k RPM's is not only dangerous, but boring.

I don't think the goal of either of these kits is to pass CA Smog (Though it'd be pretty hard to tell what's done to the car with the rotrex, it looks basically stock).

Most of us have figured out by now how to get around issues with smogging our cars. The law's are complicated, but here's a posting directly from the CA DMV Site regarding smogging your car:

Cars Six Years Old and Newer

If your vehicle is six years old or newer, you will be charged an annual smog abatement fee when you register your vehicle, rather than being required to provide smog certification.

Exceptions
The six-year-or-newer rule doesn't apply to nonresident and custom-built cars made since 1976. Those vehicles require smog certification. If you have a custom or specially constructed car, however, you might need a different type of smog certification.

Title Transfer and Smog Requirements

When you sell a vehicle that is four or fewer model years old, a smog certificate will not be required in order to transfer the title. The buyer will pay a smog transfer fee of $8. If the vehicle sold is more than four model years old, the seller must provide evidence of a current smog certification except in any of the following situations:

The vehicle transfer occurs between a spouse, sibling, child, parent, grandparent, or grandchild.
The vehicle was registered and biennial smog certification was submitted to the DMV within 90 days before the date the title transfer took place. A vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification.

So I don't have to worry about smogging my car until 2012, and if I decide to sell it, I don't have to worry about that until 2010.

Even if either of those dates passes, like I said, it's NOT that hard to get your car to pass smog . Jan's 2.0 Stroker kit passed with flying colors!

I understand that completely And you guy's and maybe gal's are doing an awesome job . Theses cars you are putting together are SWEET! But that being said, I don't see how this is going to effect me, a middle aged old guy, that just wants to know the best path to follow in modding my car. A car that I want drivable, smooth and with more power and legal. I have been told that 230-250 whp is the most optimum power range for a daily street driven car. I use my car every day to get to work. This thread is more fantasy than real life, which is cool, we need to dream . So i'm now rambling so i'll shut up.

Just get a head and tune and you are done. Leave the stock IC and stock air box and be happy.

It really isn't that hard any more to get to 230.

I'm lucky enough to have the funds to drive my hobby. I hooked up with the right guy at the right time (man that sounds bad).

Now that Mega and RMW are working together it means projects like mine and others will all benefit. None of these projects are financial wins for the Manufacturer because there just isn't enough guys willing to take it that far. But we are lucky that guys like Jan and Mr. H are and we/you will all benefit in the form of trickle down technologies. I wish I could tell you what they are trying in my car now because it is really cool. I would have never thought to try this.

How long ago was 200WHP a big deal?

just for clarification, this is comparison of turbo only dyno vs. stroker with stk pulley and danny's monster. really apples to oranges, but gives you an indication of the different stages of components and range of power.

at 3000 rpm whp/tq

danny 100/175
stroker 120/205
turbo 80/140

at 4000 rpm

danny 148/192
stroker 162/212
turbo 150/190

at 5000 rpm

danny 182/192
stroker 208/215
turbo 250/263

Different strokes for different folks.

It all depends on what you want from your car. I for one love the options.

Mr. H? How did that little PWR cooler do on the R50??

SURPRISINGLY, WORKED GREAT! NEVER LIKED WATER/AIR DUE TO ADDED COMPLEXITY, BUT THE "MINI" BARREL FIT GREAT, REAL COMPACT, AND CAN SUPPORT 250WHP, MAYBE 300WHP INTERMITTENT. SETUP CAN WORK ON A COOPER S AS WELL.

This is true. We should take a lesson from BMW and the CSL. No amount of weight is insignifigant! (They saved several grams on the car by making the shift boot out of microfiber instead of leather) .
