Noob Brake Question

Hello NAMMers...I am planning on upgrading my rotors, brake lines, and brake fluid sometime in the next few months. I am just lacking any kind of knowledge regarding brakes, so I have a few basic questions:

1) If I keep my JCW brake kit, do I have to continue to use rotors the same size as my current ones? Or can they be larger in diameter?

2) If I keep my JCW brake it, can anyone recommend a top of the line rotor to get? If not, I will just get the JCW slotted/drilled rotors. I do prefer a little bling and do not do enough stressful braking to avoid getting drilled rotors.

3) How come Mini doesn't make drilled and slotted JCW rotors for the back? Any other manufacturers do that? Or is it not worth it?

4) If I did not change the rotors, but just changed the brakelines to stainless steel (more for show) and switched to ATE Super Blue Racing fluid, what differences would I notice if anything?

5) How many hours would changing out rotors, brake lines, and fluid take at a shop?

Thanks!

Why dont you like the brake setup you have now? Also do you track alot? If not i would think the current setup you have is good for bling and good stopping. With the money you save think about the stuff you ould get to make if go faster or handle better

change the brakelines for show? can you even see them?

we put Stoptechs on in 2 hours, including bleeding. There's no reason a shop should charge you more than two hours for pads, rotors lines and bleeding the system.

Unless you are tracking the car, none of the things you mention matter.

as for options for the JCW kit, there aren't many. Ken @ K&S is the man to talk to (brakeguru on NAM). He was working on some Hawk pads for the JCW kit....HP+. Great bite but at the expense of dust. Also.....TCE....both Todd or Ken know their ****

there's no benefit to drilled rotors except looks. the 'upgrade' is to a 2pc rotor which is a) lighter and b) able to handle more heat (track work etc). dba is a good choice here, but no JCW fitment that I'm aware of yet. Be prepared to pay...$800+ for 2pc rotor pairs.

Well, the JCW brakes are okay, and I don't think I'll ever do a real BBK like Brembo or Stoptech, etc. I mainly just like the look of the drilled and slotted rotors behind my rims. Since I will be removing everything to do the rotors, I might as well do the fluid and the lines.

I've already blown alot of money, on suspension and ECU so, brakes are the next thing. Maybe in the long term I will do more with exhaust, but not right now.

swapping rotors is a 15 minute affair....the lines and fluid aren't involved

i have the r56 witch has the old jcw brakes on it. i find that they worked ok but when i put carbotech pads (auto x compound) on them it real made them work lods better. as for the the lines/fluid it does not take long it should not take over an hour for a shade tree guy.

1) You can change the JCW rotor by JCW drilled and slotted (it's my plan) from http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=accessoryPart5&siteid=214217&cata logid=3751&categoryID=75816 .

2) There is Brembo JCW rotor (but it's hard to find).

3) For the back rotor brake it dosen't worth.

um the point is, is that jcw brakes are a good set and instaling a set of carbotech would make them far better to point that he wold not need to go to the trouble of new rotors.

thanks for the input guys....the time info is good to know so I don't get raped by any installers. (no pot-stirring comments here PGT LOL!)

Um....PGT, have you changed anything else with your JCW brakes? Just fluids perhaps? I'll prol just shell out the couple hundred bucks just to get the rotor bling even though I might only track/auto-x it a few times a year.

Anybody know how much the Brembo rotors fit for JCW cost?

Oh and thanks for the info on the Carbotech...know of a good place to get those?

Check with Todd at TCE brakes, he may be able to hook you up, front and rear at a good price.
