Oil Catch Can question

Does this mod actually help with drive ability and performance or is it just to make our engine bay look sexy? I've seen the intercooler and how it looks on the inside but is that enough junk to rob our precious HP?

The purpose of the oil catch can is to remove oil, coming mostly from the PVC line, before it reachs the intercooler. Any coating of oil in the intercooler will reduce the ability of it to cool the air. Some cars get more oil than others. Will you notice a difference? Probably not, as it happens gradually. I like to keep things clean and run one on my MINI.

I think im going to get one. Sometimes when i drive the car hard i can smell oil for about 5 seconds of letting of the pedal. Does the OCC stop that?

Probably not, but it WILL keep the oil out of the IC. Of course you can always just remove the IC and clean it on a regular basis.

Check out my pic of the proper install of an OCC. You can always go for a single metal can, just run both hoses to the can and then to the high vacuum line (grey) under the IC.

BTW, I see little benefit in the second can - compared to the PCV valve line, I'd expect that there would be little additional caught by the second can.

Scott - what's your experience? How much oil do you get in the second can compared to the first?

What are you considering to be the first and second cans?

The metal eBay ($35) can up near the firewall catches the most oil, the Alta can catches the oily water from the intake hose. Both do what they are supposed to do. The amount I get depends greatly on the kind of driving I do. After a track day or a weekend of fun driving I get the most. I ususally empty out each about every other month. I have a section of roof gutter guard in both cans that act as baffles to catch as much vapor as possible. After about a year of use I found no residue in the IC.
The link for the compressor filter is nice, but I would have to check that about every week to make sure it didn't clog up. To small IMHO.

Is yours routed to the grey line or the intake hose?

On my `05 S, I get about a half-ounce per 8K miles, and that's with the compressor filter removing ALL the vapor in the PCV line. My IC has stayed dry for more than a year. Even a day-long really fast club run barely increases the amount visible in my OCC.

I know that many people say that their OCC catches ounces per month. Maybe the earlier valve seals weren't as tight or something? I did do a very careful breakin (in about a week), so perhaps that wears in the seals better?

Are you connected to both breather tubes?

Scott: excellent information as always.

Can't stress enough the importance of these mods for the longevity of the motor and performance. Inexpensive, nearly fun to install! Great mod!
