I'm making plans to have a 15% reduction pulley installed.
I've been talking with Don over at dmhmotorsports, when he say it listed in my Sig, he was asking why I would remove a Bosch product and replace it with the S.D. coil Pack.

I was under the impression that it was a good upgrade, especially when running mods on the car.

He said it might have good low end results but drops off on the high end.

I'm just curious because after installing the Coil pack, Plugs and wires upgrades I was noticing better results.

Since they are from a racing background it made me start wondering about the quality of the product. Also, mentioned Lucky Dog Garage and he said they would advise me to remove the S.D. As Well

Just trying to get different opinions.

I've been running 15,000 miles on a modified head, header, ecu, injectors, cam, blah, blah, blah with a stock coil pack without any issues caused by the coil pack. The only problem I had was one of my plug wires went bad and took out one of the electrodes on the coil pack. Of course I had been running 70,000 miles on the original plug wires when that happened.

So I replaced the plugs, wires, and coil pack with stock stuff and everything is fine. Did I also mention that I'm running over 220whp and ~180 ft/lbs of torque?

Yea, in reality it's very hard to beat the stock coil.
If you want a better bang, then it will cost ya about $800 and that's with all MSD stuff. Ford midget racing coil and MSD ignition box, ... and new MSD wires. But still, my understanding is that the factory system packs a great punch.

Yep - multiple-spark discharge systems have their uses, but it only takes one good spark to ignite the air/fuel mixture. If the first spark does the trick, the subsequent sparks don't do anything. Likewise, if a standard-voltage coil provides reliable combustion, raising the coil voltage won't help anything either,

Unless you've got some evidence that the stock coil isn't igniting the air/fuel mixture reliably, upgrading the coil and/or wires isn't going to do anything for you.

Yeah, all out drag motors with 13:1 compression, a whole lot of boost ie-20+lbs or any form of motor not using gas. IE-alky or nitro motors need the extra spark energy because its harder to light them off. Multiple spark discharge really does little to nothing on a street or even modded street motor.

I'm still trying to figure out which one is a better choice to run with.
I had my SD in for about a month before switching back to my Bosch stock coil pack.

I'm looking to see if there are any hard #'s out there comparing the two.
I only want one so I can free up room and funds in order to get the parts I DO want.

Any info appreciated.

TIA!

Take this for what it is worth. Before I bought my Demon from Pilo way back when, I had heard that the Neon guys (I can not find the info now) were reporting some reliability problems with them. I went ahead and bought one to try it out. I ran the pack for less than 6 weeks and electrode 3 failed. I tested several times to verify it was indeed the pack and not something else I had done. The Demon found a final home in a box in the back of a garage. Hopefully the manufacturer was able to identify the cause of the failures and correct them by now, but who knows. I really can't speak to any performance changes that can be attributed to the Demon since I have no idea if it ever worked properly.

Hope that helps.

if it aint broke don't fix it...

lets put it this way... for the cost of a fried ecu... i'll keep the stocker. It's not that the coil pack could fry the ecu... (no proof but i've heard much speculation) but why mess with electrical stuff when you don't have to. Any electrical failure on this car is massive in terms of cash to fix it...

The do create a really cool fireworks show with arcs to a strut bar on the dyno! Looked really cool at the Dragon last spring. Shoot, I'd add in a Uselesschip too and really flush some cash! LOL

my MSD and nology wires fried my ecu

My car has been in the shop 2 weeks with a burned ecu, it blew out an IGBT which I am trying to get, $1,500 for a new ECU is too much.

I pulled the number 1 Nology wire and it seperated from the part that connects to the spark plug. pushed it back in as much as I could, had some missing issues, but nothing major. One day my car felt like it was running on 2 cylinders, shut it down. tried to start it, it would only turn, I noticed the coil was extra hot and some melted epoxy came out of somewhere.

The diagnosis was that the cable demanded too much current from the coil and that fired the IGBT in the cpu.
