Drivetrain $300 superchip
Diamond Racing is selling the supership for the MINI Cooper S for 300 bucks. Now correct me if I am wrong but isn't Randy selling the same thing for $720. No disrespect to Randy because he is does some awesome things but I am just confused how there is that big of a price difference. Here is the link Diamond Racing
Hello I will jump on board with this.
I believe Randy has the ability to modify more then 2 points. The Superchips upgrade for the "S" will only provide 6HP. With this mod we can only change fuel and timing.
So, in doing this right, I hope Randy has the ability to make more modifications to the ECU toher then just fuel and timing.
I believe Randy has posted info concerning his ECU mod somewhere.
Diamond Racing currently owns 2 CVT's which are NASP. So, it makes it harder for us to develop Cooper "S" only products.

What would would you modify? The stock ECU doesn't manage boost, meaning it isn't telling the supercharger how much boost to make, that is all done mechanically. So all you would be altering would be in fact fueling and timing at different RPM points. Hopefully they'd also raise the rev limiter and get rid of the speed limiter, which from what i know is 2 of the easier things to do. Actually getting the fueling and timing correct is the real chore. Granted it sounds simple but it far from it. 6hp really isn't that bad in my opinion, the pulley is the thing that is going to make serious power. Chip-tuning a motor in which you can only alter timing and fuel won't make tons of power. All you're going to be doing is leaning it out down low, maybe keeping fuel the same in the uper revs, maybe adding some in, I know the stock management is super rich, and also advancing the timing ever so slightly since it has to be able to run on 91 octane fuel here in the USA. So Randy what is your's doing that it is making so much more power?

Not to high jack this forum, but to answer the question asked of me. Anybody else can send an email to tech@diamondracinggroup.com
andy@ross-tech.com,
Well we had already purchased our Mini's before we thought of making Diamond Racing a company.
Besides any body can buy a fast car and make it faster. The challenge is in making a slow car faster then the fast cars.
You know I just get a warm feeling all over knowing that, our 2 CVT's, the slowest MINI configuration in the US market, can whoop up on most stock Cooper "S"'s. Plus, the fact that what we have done with the CVT's still cost less then the price of a Cooper "S".
Not to mention the knowledge, experience, friends and foes we have gained along the way.

Aren't we talking about two different things? I thought Superchips was to get more power out of a stock MCS and what Randy is doing is optimizing performance with the pulley? You wouldn't end up with the same power installing the pulley and then using Superchips, would you?

That's really interesting. I took a quick look at the diamond racing web site and I didnt really see anything that looked like it would make CVT into a beast. I really like the idea so this isnt meant as a knock but can you possibly show is some numbers and point to the specific mods you are making? Or is it all still in development/testing?
Thanks

Good question...We look for things that work, not what sells or what is the next hype. What works does not always equal HP or Torque as being measured by a Dyno.
Some mods we are working on are under development and testing.
Allot of it is stop light to stop light stuff, in the turns up Palomar mountain and then pulling better times at autocross events. From giving people rides in the "S" then having them ride in ours.
I guess one could also say we have more aggressive driving habits, then the average. Which may make up for some.
But, port and polished gasket matched head with now what I call a mild cam. I get my radical race cam back this week after some more machine work and testing was done. We have less Unsprung weight on each corner. ECU mods, intakes, ETC. ETC... It all adds up.
Nothing too radical. YET...
The NASP 1.6 just has a good base to start from. IMHO

See thats the thing with the Mini, you are not going to create a lean condition from boost alone, unless you really leaned this thing out. Hell the stock programming runs rich enough to support an upgraded pulley, so fueling isn't a factor. Look at Andy's dyno graph, both stock and modded the A/F curves are just aout equal. Personally I don't think any of the chips out there now are worth a grain of salt considering the prices they are charging. Not many people have shown real gains with them when dyno'd privately.
