Arlington County Property Taxes

Does anyone know how much I can expect to pay in property taxes on an 06 Cooper in Arlington County? I'm not looking forward to this at all, but I'm going to need to pay up soon.

We paid about $230 for our 2004 MCS and about $195 for our 2003 MC. Those are rough numbers. I don't have the bill in front of me.

The rates were much higher this year as VA repealed part of the repeal of the personal property tax.

I just paid $548 I think it was for a 05 S convert. in Fairfax county. Does the rate vary by county much?

I'm not sure but I did notice something about how the state will subsidize 40% of the tax on cars valued under $20k. Cars that are worth more than that must pay the full tax. Considering my car's sticker price was $20,150 I hope I'll be ok but I'm not sure because some used value estimates I've seen on KBB and NADA have been higher than what I paid for the car.

My understanding is that the state will subsidize the first $20K of value... meaning that you will only pay "full tax" on the amount over $20,000.

Let me help you with that:

MC = MINI Cooper (i.e. hardtop)
MCS = MINI Cooper S (i.e. hardtop)
MCC = MINI Cooper Convertible
MCSC = MINI Cooper S Convertible

So, you have an MCC.

Now, some people, if they have an automatic, will add a lower-case "a" on the end to signify that. For example, an MCSCa is an automatic MINI Cooper S Convertible. Since (prior to 2007), the MC and MCC automatics are actually a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), some people with Coopers use that in lower case instead - MCcvt or MCCcvt.

There is no designation for manual transmissions - it is generally assumed if there isn't an "a" or "cvt".

property tax=license fee???

please tell me this is the license fee and not an additonal tax. while it sounds pretty high, if you pay an additional fee for plates, thats outrageous. The single thing that got arnold elected here in the land of fruits and nuts the first time was the vehicle license fee, which his predecessor doubled and he promised to repeal immediately-which he did.

How he got re-elected is beyond me though.

Here in VA we have personal property tax. It is an additional tax. Over and above any other taxes you might pay whilst buying, titling and licensing a new MINI. Once you own your MINI, you get to pay a personal property tax on it every year. And on every other vehicle you own too. Over the past several years, Virginia has been phasing this tax out. However, this year the budget is in a big mess so they repealed that part of the repeal and brought the tax back up again.

Big pain in the behind. But you know, death and taxes

Take solace that it's only a MINI. Kinda kills any dreams of owning a M3, M5 or M6.

I bought my first BMW 320i in 1978 and paid $10500 - personal property tax was 7.5%

10500 x 7.5% = 787.50

Well it's good to hear it won't be as high as I thought. Somebody told me it would be 5% of the value of my car, which would put it around $1000. But it sounds like they were wrong.

Personal property taxes on cars is a crime! Maybe I should move to MD, then I could have a radar detector too.

They are a pain, but I will say I have always been pleased with the level of services I get for my taxes in VA. I have had occasion to call the police and fire department and they have basically responded about the same time I hang up the phone. My water meter has frozen five winters in a row, and they will send someone on a Sunday to thaw it out for me. Hate taxes, but at least I am getting something (a little something) for them.

True. And the roads are pretty good in Northern VA too.

Car insurance is also much cheaper in VA than Philly, so I guess I can use the savings to put toward my taxes.
