hey im matt. 17. one of my moms employees who has a cooper s which is 04 or 05 cant really speak english too well so he has me research. he has been complaining about this noise in his car. most of the time you let go of the gas the muffler makes a small rattling/popping noise. not loud. but wasnt there before. i was wondering if any of you guys experienced the same thing.
and im looking for a mechanic preferably around annandale/falls church/mclean /vienna / arlington/ somewhere near there that knows what they are doing with a mini. he's had mechanics ask him how to pop the hood :O... and not trying to go dealer... too exspensive.
thanks.

May want to pull the car over a pit and have a muffler guy peek at it with you to find the source of the noise. My local jiffy lube has a great pit I can use and the folks there seem to love peeking under my mini/hood.
sounds like the famous "burble" exhaust sound. check out post #6 with the video.

Knowing whether the car is an 04 or an 05 makes a big difference. With the 02-04 MCS, the exhaust had a nice burble but no off-throttle exhaust "pop" like the 05-06 and the brand new factory JCW. The clip that O.C.abrio references shows the normal off-throttle pop between 30-31 secs in. On an 05 this would be completely normal (and something we love and relish!)
My concern would be if this is an 04 as there shouldn't be any loud pop/rattle. Secondly if the person has owned the car for a while and never heard this, obviously something forced the change. Have you heard it or could you send them the good clip O.C.abrio found to see if that is the sound they are hearing?

No doubt it sounds like Burble, everyone that rides with me that has never been in an MCS says "Whats that noise", I even had one co-worker thinking there was something really wrong with the car....nope just burble.
BTW- There is also a "clunk" when you shift from 1st to 2nd that can be heard from time to time, that also is normal. It might be hard to hear because of the burble.

if it sounds throaty, its likely the burble. but if its a rattle noise, her exhaust hangers could be torn, that happened to me on my 2005 and made some really annoying noises whenever the engine moved the exhaust sharply
"what sort of driver in America can't read or speak english but has a drivers license......?"
Am I the only one that noticed this?

Do you live in the Northern VA/DC Metro area because it is a very diverse area with many people that can not speak English very well and are not comfortable or intimidated by writing it. Also being able to write and speak English is not required to get a drivers license. The exams are available in English and Spanish. Or you can provide your own translator if you speak another language. I know many people that drive and don't speak English well, it is more common than you might think.
