[Sat, Jun 14th @ 11.30am] Indian Food Fanatics Get Together
Seems like there are quite a few indian food fanatics among us here.
There are quite a few good Indian food restaurants in our area for us to try as well.
Three month ago we went to one, after the MINI of Sterling meet. The name is "Minerva". We had a blast, enjoy the food and lot of sweat as well.
It's about time to get together again. we're planning to have one soon. At the moment we have a short list of restaurant in hand, we will go out and try to find an ultimate one.
(and we will definitely gain more weight pretty soon
)
We also need your input as well. Please come in and share with us your experience here.

The Cuisine of India is characterized by its sophisticated and subtle use of many spices and herbs. Considered by some to be one of the world's most diverse
cuisines, each family of this cuisine is characterized by a wide assortment of dishes and cooking techniques.
Though a significant portion of Indian food is vegetarian, many traditional Indian dishes also include chicken, goat, lamb, fish, and other meats.

I will have a full plate of Tandoori ready for you.
I love Indian food. If you're interested in trying something a little different from the usual, I might suggest southern Indian cuisine. There is a place in Fairfax called Woodlawn and another in Takoma Park (Udupi Palace?) which I cannot remember the name of right now. The southern Indian food tends to use different spices. In general I find it less "hot" spicy. And, they also have these enormous stuffed crispy crepes called Dosas that are delicious.

If you want to add another place to the list, there's a pretty good Indian place here in frederick called Nilgiris (http://www.nilgiris-us.com/). I've been once and the curried goat was quite good.
Plenty of good Indian restaurants in the Gaithersburg/Germantown area as well.
Trending Topics
Bombay Bistro - Rockville is tops (limited parking)
Udupi Palace - Yes yes (parking is so-so)
Bombay Restaurant - White Oak (top Chicken Tikka Masala - plenty of parking)
Akbar - Columbia (good food and parking)

Across the street (other side of 29) from Woodlands is Bombay Cafe, they are a budget buffet style place that I frequent when I don't feel like cooking for myself but want Indian food.
Couple of other recommendations for Indian food.
Jaipur - In the circle towers building in Fairfax (west of Nutley st)
Indique - Cleveland Park (Anglicized indian food experience...good for noobs)
Indique Heights - Friendship Heights (Step up from Indique in the indianness of the food and ambiance...my overall DC favorite)
Rasika - The most expen$ive "Indian" place I've eaten at...fusion stuff, I've had very interesting meals here. For special occasions only (for me at least).
Raavi Kebab - in Arlington, off Glebe...best Kebabs hands down (and they're open late)
Taj Cafe - in Mclean, good Tandoori chicken, but even better lamb chops.
Any other questions about the local Indian food scene...feel free to ask.
Fairfax isn't so bad...but having to wait out in the cold at Herndon is not fun.
Minerva definitely has the bang for your buck down in the afternoons (buffet only).
Anyone familiar with any good indo-chinese places in the area? (for those not familiar with the concept....think chinese with the kick of indian spices)
agreed, but not so much of the having to wait.

Good food selection and pretty spicier than other restaurant. Love it.
If you'd like to try indo-china, try Thai food. Thai food is the good combination of Chinese food and Indian food.
There are several good Thai place (real Thai food) in Fairfax area. A small place called Pilin Thai Restaurant, http://www.pilinthairestaurant.com/, near Tyson Corner, VA. Good Authentic Thai food. The downside, they are always crowded, small and might not be a good place for your first date.

I did visit the Falls Church location for the first time about a month ago though.
Oh yes, I keep calling it Woodlawn lol. I can't ever seem to remember that its Woodlands.
Ive been wanting to goto Rasika and Indique for quite sometime and would love to go there if anyone is interested. My friend designed the interiors for one of the Indique restaurants...
Pilin is great. I used to go there for lunch when I worked in Tysons.

You should try Ravi Kebab (703-522-6666)then....it's kind of a hole in the wall, but they've got the best stuff in town.
They usually make some of their better dishes only on the weekends though, so call before you go.
I'm kind of a lazy cook, so my "Indian" chicken curry involves....I can of red curry soup(from the thai shop down the street), add indian spices, add meat...cook...voila...
For the more authentic meals, I go to continental.com and buy a ticket to Houston.
I'll try to get some of my mum's recipes when I get back from vacation in 2 weeks.
Also, if you guys are ever in Houston and craving some Indian food - Kaiser's Himalaya is THE BEST. Not a very fancy place, the chef himself takes your order....best indian fish I've ever had. The first time I saw FeedBack I thought it was the chef (Kaiser)....they're almost twins.

as the other indian, I will have to say usually if i ever want good/great indian food, i usually head down to the kitchen and see the mom has been cookin.
perks of living at home.
but i will have to vouch for Udupi Palace. even though they are a vegetarian restaurant, their Masala Dosha, Puri, and potato curries are my fav from there. although i haven't been down there in awhile. good south indian food.
I can always do akbar in columbia, as long as i have time set aside to sleep afterwards. Mango Lassee please.
I've heard of Woodlands, but never been there, since it's far for me.
oh and stay away from bombay grill, and bombay peacock grill. there are a few of em scattered around everywhere. their food isn't great. that's bad for me to say since i know the owners. haha.
