NoVA to soon have HOT Lanes!!
NoVA to soon have HOT Lanes!!
Still in the early stages, but looks like work would begin next Spring.
This isn't as bad as it sounds. I think it's pretty good once you listen to the details:
1. The biggest congestion area on I-95 SB is the end of the HOV between Dumfries and Quantico (I sit in it daily). This will extend the hov down to Massaponix (South of Fredericksburg) which is good because most people get off of I-95 before Massaponix. This will releave A LOT of congestion.
2. The HOT lanes will still be free to people who have 3 or more people in the car. The people who will have to start paying are the stupid Hybrid drivers who get on there everyday and only have one person in there car. The tolls are expected to be a low fee during non peak times, as low as $.10 per mile and high during peak times to cut back on people who will pay them and keep the number of single passenger cars down as much as possible.
But like Scavenger mentioned it's probably gonna be a lot of construction going on. Luckily with I-95 there is a lot of grass area where they will be extending the lanes down to Massaponix so hopefully they won't have to shut down any lanes for the work.
This is probably the first time that I've ever agreed with ANYTHING that VA has decided to do.

Hmm.... I never did like the government handing off assets to private companies. At least government doesn't have to add a profit margin to its operating costs.
The island of Oahu is the only place with 3 Interstate highways that don't even cover the whole state, let alone go "interstate".

Back to the topic of HOT lanes. What I can't figure out is how they'll manage the on/off traffic for the portion of the HOT lanes on the beltway that go from Springfield to the American Legion Bridge. Are they going to build a center/separated highway like they did on I-395? I haven't seen the plans...
The three highways connect all of the major military installations on the island with Pearl Harbor, the former Naval Base at Barber's Point, and the airports at Hickam Air Force Base, Marine Corp Base Kaneohe Bay and Wheeler Army Airfield. This was not a coincidence. The interstate system was originally pushed as a civil defense project.

... and rush hour on the H-1 and H-2 are miserable! But I still object to politicians giving away revenue capacity paid for with public dollars!
