motor swaps

now, before I ask this.. I want to say I have no intention or money to actually go through with it. But I was thinking alot about it today, and how cool it would be to put a bigger motor in the cooper. Now, I know i'm not the only one who has thought of this.. but has anyone done it? and any ideas what would fit??

I wonder if anything other than the 1.6 liter motor would fit. The engine compartment seems so tight as it is. It seems one would have to remove something from the engine bay to make room for a larger engine, but what do I know.

Weight is a consideration too - a heavier engine could unbalance the car. Although, it probably wouldn't be hard to find a larger motor that weighs the same as the pentagon.

Well what I would do is take everything out from under the hood, and stick the 2.5 litre boxer engine from the STI, I dont know if it could fit, but it would be my engine of choice, of course this is all just a pipe dream

would you have to run awd or rwd if you did that? it would be alot harder atleast I was thinking more on the lines of a motor from a front wheel drive car. like the new si motor, or mabye the srt4?
now a small block chevy would be fun too

Nothing would be better than an STI engine with a nasty turbo...and an AWD conversion

See link.

I'll caution, my sources remain too quiet. IMHO, its been done. But who has it...? (I'll venture its tracked competitively somewhere as "stock", mum seems to be the word)

Useable 2.0l mopars are cheap, $400. Parts to rebuild are way cheap, theres millions of them in existance. The big things are the custom bell housing for the tranny (which shouldn't be too expensive to have fabbed considering the motors are nearly identical) and wiring harness, might be simple...? Next are the custom engine mounts; not a big deal. Oh, also you'll need a custom intake manifold (is a big deal).

Further, if the 2.0l fits, the 2.4l is also a possibility (literally a motormount away). SRT Cooper anyone... ?

I saw it... but this is easier.

If you can afford that.... git-r-done did. (I love the throaty subbie boxer)
It'd be hilarious to put an STi badge next to a JCW.

There's no way that STi motor would fit between the wheel well. Heck, even if you removed the wheel wheels, I'm not sure it would fit betwen the struts.

It would be interesting to know the measurement between the STi upper strut mounts (where they mount to the wheel wells) and the distance between the Mini's upper strut mounts.

I think you'd be better off putting a RWD setup in the car. But then you'd have to modify the firewall.

Fun to think about though.....

Well, the SRT4 motor may be a possibility but don't the S models have a similar transmission to the SVT Focus?
Another possibility is swapping in the chrysler internals into the stock block to bring the 1.6L to 2.4L. Although Chrysler claims the two engines are fairly different. http://www.allpar.com/mopar/rover.html

I was thinking the same thing the other day about the R56 motor and the 6-speed Getrag.

Best of both worlds...

will the svt focus motor fit? and I thout WRC standards required a 2.0? thats just a guess that I have nothing to back up with. AND wasn't the SVT created for rally?

If I had the $$$, and it would have to be a lot, I would front half one and put a blown SHO 3.0 in one. The turbo SHO's and even nastier but a lot more plumbing and hassle. The blower from a SC T-bird is a popular unit to use. A Mini turning 7500 RPM with 350-425 at the wheels would destroy a lot of things.
