Dodge Neon 2.0

For those who are always wanting to go faster, has anyone thought about looking into this. I saw one the other day at work and swore it looked just alike! I know in foreign markets, Dodge puts the 1.6 Tritec engine in the Neons as oppoese the 2.0.

Thoughts?

As I recall...someone has started a topic on this a LONG time ago. I "believe" they said it was pretty much the same motor. And I think it is in the right forum since it could relate to the Cooper.

I have been vry interested in this but with little follow through....you might want to follow the "62" thread as this holds a lot of promise.....and keeps the car a lot like what we have but "bigger"

I figured the block was the same. If that's the case, then it should drop right in. I wonder if there's enough meat between the cylinder walls to punch it out enough to at least fit the 2.0 pistons in there.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. What I was getting at was it should fit right in place if the blocks were externally the same.

In that perspective, no this shouldn't be in the OT forum. It's in the correct spot as far as I could tell. This would be directly NON-S and a somewhat envolved performance mod.

3.44 X 3.27 Neon 2.0 ....
3.03 x 3.38 MINI 1.6 ...

Often an engine block can go out 40 thousandths and be OK. That's pushing it though. If it's the same block and the MINI's engine is just a smaller bore than the Neon engine, then I don't see why it wouldn't work.

If someone had a head off of each, one could tell for sure!

After looking at the MC engine, I see a crank, alt, AC, and tensioner pulley on the belt. The water pump must be run off of the timing belt, same as the Neon 2.0. I really think it would work. The real problem after doing all that is making it run correctly since no individual can't readily do their own tuning on the MINI pcm.

I bet a 2.0 with the newer 6 speed tranny would be an absolute BLAST to drive. It shouldn't add any weight and would probably run right up there, if not surpass, the S.

I dunno ... maybe it's just wishful thinking though.

That's an interesting link 440, but I'd like to see some more info on the 2.0 engine rather than the 2.4. I think all the piping from the turbo and all might be a little much.

Reliability is of utmost importance on this one. If my wife could look at HER car and tell it wasn't the same, then it would be a no go!

Interesting though, the crank on the MINI engine is a longer stroke, so if it was to achieved through a machine shop, it wouldn't take 40 thou of boring to do it.

Check this out:

Apparently, 2.0 and 2.4 share a lot. There is a bracket issue, seeing that we don't see many 1.6 to 2.0 swaps...

But if you did the 2.0, the 2.4 swap would require a PT Cruiser engine bracket

Now thats funny.

I'll fuel the rumor mill. Apparently, the 2.0L mopar swap has been done already in Oregon. No further details yet, I want pics to confirm first.

No pics, no VISUAL confirmation. But this is so big it won't stay underground long.

I did quite a bit of slueth work to come to my conclusion that yes, Madness has transplanted the 2.0, apparently rather successfully in a "couple" MINIs.

And if the 2.0 is a "no brainer..." as my investigation turned up, the 2.4 (atleast non-turbo) is just a motor mount (and probably a hood) away.

To slow the rumor mill. I'm in Oregon and have been to Mini-Madness. There were no Neon's to be seen. Not even in the parking lot.

The blocks are nearly indistinguisable. But I agree on being outta sight, I have a feeling that the owners of said swaps are keeping a low profile, probably for competitive purposes.

looked into this a while ago... grabed a head gasket from an srt4 that i had laying around... very similar very very similar... designs are almost identical as far as passages and water jackets are concerned... biggest problem though... its about 20% larger than our motors... it is physically a much bigger motor

after doing Porschev conversions, MiataMonster conversions, 914-V8 conversions...i can tell you this:

Don't do it.

Stick to your engine mods, or just turbo the damn 1.6, you don't need the headache of stuffing a bigger motor and having to modify EVERYTHING around it.

Turbo it, add what needs adding and you're done, clean, adjustable power without any of the quirks associated with swapping engine types(even 4cyl to 4cyl)

The interesting part is the standard MINI motor is Chrysler. Swapping motors across brands don't get any easier than this. The Tritec 1.6l is availble in Neons (Mexico, Europe), which also have availible 2.0l (sohc and dohc) and 2.4l options.

This isn't at a Porschev level of difficulty. Although I would not rely on this conversion for a daily driver.

Robino, compare the MINIs gasket to a 2.0 sohc motor....

The 2.4l swap would be a stretch. The 2.0l is very doable.
