Turbo MC? anyone yet?

Has anyone turbo charged a mini cooper? My roomate and I talked about it today and I am very interested. He has built turbos for Honda's and Acura's in the past and he informed me that maybe he could build me one. He further states that at 6 or 7 psi's and good engine management the motor should be fine.

What do you guys think?

There's been 2 or 3 I think. I was planning on it by the end of this year but with my new purchases (see thread in this section)...my turbo conquest has to be halted until I get the CC paid off.

It's been tried a few times. I think a few were even slightly driveable. I don't think any made it to daily driver status.

m7 tried on a couple of cars in the early days and fried 'em up pretty good...I don't remember specifics, but I'm sure a search may yield some info

i have the kit from turbo-kits.com

i have a greddy boost controller installed.. and i can safely run about 6-7psi. I can boost it up to 10.. but it's pointless and dangerous.

Yeah...but your probably only running the T-20 which is like a hair dryer. I want to boost around 32 psi.

How do you like it? Do you run intercooler, what are your specs? I would be interested in seeing some pics. Thanks!

Yea it doesn't sound like its something worth messing with. If you can just wait, save a little money, and trade for an 07. I'd rather have a turbo engineered by the manufacturer and under warranty Back in high school I drove an 89 Volvo 740 Turbo and they can be very tempermental and problematic if not done right. But today's turbos found in production cars are a lot better and reliable than they used to be...

ya one thing goes wrong in a turbo and your whole motors gone. I think the waste gate almost makes it worth your troubles though

You would rather pay $30K+ and wait than spend $2-3K (assuming you have a MC) to get the same power?

Forced induction in production cars are done with emmission in mind and really limit the max potential. Just look at all the current S owner upping the boost. I guess you do have the advantage of factory warranty but it comes at a price of no further mods.

Tuning is the key to aftermarket turbo and if thats done right you get great power gains with reliability. If your warranty has expired on your MC I think turbo would great. I have not owned my MC too long so still trying to make it healty before adding a turbo. I'm probably going to keep it mild just enought to **** off the new S owners 8psi or less
