what is the best cold air intake for 06 MC?

hi, i know this is a subject of personal preference,

but since i'm in the market, what is the best cold air intake for a 2006 non-s MC?

the requirements are:

1. filter is replacable, and you've gotta show me where to get more of them (don't like foam (unless replacable as well) and don't like the washable stuff)

2. no silicone hoses (something a bit more pressure resistant and heavy duty, e.g. metal or metal reinforced)

3. hopefully not a lot of cutting involved in the installation

4. can't be a hack job, e.g. has to fit just by itself, without serious or heavy modifications to the product itself

and also could someone please once recommending the product please point me to the right place to get the intake at?

thanks for the time

p.s. i live in a place with constant sandstorms, air quality the equivilent of smoking 5-6 packs a day without filters, and smog that vaguely resembles the fog of san francisco, but not quite water based

so thats why the replacable filters

thanks again

Those are some pretty specific requirements.

Sounds like you're looking for the JCW MINI Cooper Air Filter. It's part of the JCW Sound Kit, but can be purchased seperately $$$$. The cool thing is that it looks stock, it uses a removable filter and it has an extra intake from the cowl.

There probably won't be much HP gain, but it sounds awesome.

http://www.johncooper.co.uk/JohnCoop...me/default.asp

Click on the "John Cooper Works" Button which gives you a Flash pop-up.

Then "Product/Model Overview"

Then "MINI Cooper"

Then "17-32"

If you haven't heard the M7 AGS intake, you are really missing out.. This intake shortens the intake tube about 1.5' and you talking about a Supercharger whine. This thing sounds like a F1 car on acceleration. Heres the link http://www.m7tuning.com/main.m7/store/10002 . Its a bit pricey but what isn't for the MCS. Hope that makes a good mind for you man... Later Spike

The M7 AGS intake is gonna be pretty pricey to put on a MC, since you
will need to trade it in on a MCS before installing it.

Um, he's looking for one for a Cooper, not an "S"

Fafnir,

If not the JCW Sound kit one, you might want to keep it stock and replace the paper filters every 6 months or so. Paper is a good filter media, it just doesn't flow well when dirty.

Why a heavy duty, pressure resistant hose? The intake hose doesn't actually sees a slight vacuum as the engine is drawing in air. In a non-S, the vacuum would be closer to atmospheric since you don't have the supercharger drawing a larger vacuum.

This is not a slam, I'm just curious if I missed something here.

1. the jcw airbox isn't a CAI right? i'd prefer a true CAI system, price is irrelevent (well, less than $500..)

2. i'm asking for the pressure resistant hose cause i'm assuming than the filter will clog after a good two-three weeks regardless, so if it jams and then callopses, well, i dunno how well thats gonna turn out, so the metal tube thing is preffered again

3. actually i'm going to take back what i said about the fog of san francisco, its more like the fog of death from silent hill, but smog (and dust/sand storms), so yeah again the replaceble filters

where can i get replacement filters for something like this? http://www.mini-madness.com/index.as...PROD&ProdID=62

and also will it fit the mini cooper (non-s) 2006?

has anyone tried this product?

what about the carbon fiber look alike version?

thanks again for the time

Yes!! '05 and '06 MC 5 sp are exactly the same. I have the 57i on my '05.

However it is not a CAI.

The aFe does fit 05-06's, just not perfectly, it takes a little bending and shoving, but no actual modification to the intake or car. The JCW filter isn't really a replacement airbox, it just replaces the top of the stock box with one that has a tube that directs sound towards the cabin. It's not a CAI/HAI. I'm not even sure it comes with a different filter panel. I don't know of any intakes that use a disposable filter element, they're all the washable cotton/foam type.

thanks for all the replies, i've just bought a K&N 57i 57-0331-1 from amazon for ~$160 shipped

this IS the right part number right? for a 2006 MC?

judging from what i see on the piper, afe, twister, typhoon, hks bent pipe, and the jcw, this design not only has the least amount of pipe length, it also has the least amount of shape changes, and turns in the pipe

be part count it comes in second and is appreciably simpler in construction than any of the others listed above

i believe that this intake combined with a CF heatshield that i'll make for it later will proally suit my needs better

i haven't heard the sound of any of the intakes listed, but since this guy has both the shortest pipe and least bends (eliminates a section of flexible plastic resonator), it should also yield the cleanest engine noise of all

though, if you don't agree with what i said, please tell me soon because i've got less than 23 hrs to change my mind before the order ships

thanks

also also does anyone know where i can get a replacement filterfor the 57i?

thanks again

- Placed on 10/18/2005 11:21:30 AM
- Shipping: UPS Second Day Air

-------------------------------------------------------------------
57-0331-1 | 57i 1 @ $ 143.85 = $ 143.85
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Subtotal: $ 143.85
Shipping and Handling: $ 12.57
Tax: $ 10.07
Total: $ 166.49

That's what I got for my '05!

Someday I will get around to sound clips, but it is awesome.

You can get replacement filters from K&N. I will buy one closer to my first cleaning.

Since I do not yet have a sound clip of the 57i in my '05 Cooper, I will give you the next best thing.

http://homepage.mac.com/jonmcdanel/iMovieTheater29.html

In that video at 25 sec, I am right at the road sign coming around the bend. You can hear me accelerate towards the camera.

So what's better the K&N 57i or the K&N Typhoon?

Yeah, I'd be interested to know too! I am getting (on order) a MCS so I think I have to go with the Typhoon anyway as the 57i doesn't appear to work with the S....But I could be wrong! My friend had the Typhoon on his Chevrolet Cavalier and it was awesome!
