aFe Magnum Force CAI

I bought an aFe Magnum Force cold air intake for my '06 MC on Amazon for $144 shipped a few weeks ago. I finally got it on Friday. It took about half an hour to install. It didn't fit perfectly in the '06. I had to bend the bolt down tab to reach the old hole from the stock airbox and the second bolt hole didn't line up at all. I finally got it crammed in there though and it seems pretty sturdy. The sound is really nice, kinda deep and throaty in the lower rpm range. It's like it went from vroom to hhrrroom. And for the best part, I had been getting an unimpressive 24-25 mpg in the city. I've been driving around all weekend (no highway at all) to see if my mileage is better and I went 89.8 miles on 3.03 gallons. That's 29.6 mpg, a 4-5 mpg increase! According my calculations it should pay for itself in about 7-8K miles. So, it sounds very cool and increased my mpg's by ~20%, so I'm pretty darned excited about it. Here's a photo:

aha a pic of the AFe
I'm ordering it soon, because of the 'heatshield' but didn't see a pic of it yet.

Any noticable performance increase?

Hi Maaij

I e-mailed Promini about 7 times and never got an answer back :( :(

I've found an online retailer who has it at the same price but haven't received a shipping quote yet. I'm waiting on that one.

Problem with the shipping are mostly due to customs check I guess.

Just to update my original post, the gas mileage increase was completely illusion. I'm not sure why I seemed to get an increase but whatever reason it's gone now. I''ve gotten no increase at all. It does still sound really cool though!

I found that when I put on my aFe set up that I loved the sound so much, in combination with the Milltek exhaust, that I was on the throttle much more....thus burning more gas and lowering my milage. Now I get about 32-33mpg...but when I first put it all on, I averaged 27-28mpg.

I can't even remember what I had stock, I also had the 15" wheels then, now I run 17" rims with 215-40-17 Pradas...which also hurt milage because that set up is really heavy.

To be honest ... it doesn't look as beneficial as it could be to me. It still uses the stock intake tube that still has the nice restrictive 90* bends in it. Looks like to me it could be more well suited if the tube was a more straight shot and the filter was more like it was standing up on its end (mouth towards the TB).

you mean like this? This was the Moss version for the older Coopers. Not sure they still make it, but if you find a tube the right diameter, you can always DIY. Might not be as pretty, but it is a straight shot.

Well I finally recieved my AFE CAI. It was very easy to install and the sound is nice. I had done a search for the kit, but it never brought up the AFE web page. The price was better elsewhere.

I was looking at the web site on the AFE. I wonder why the MC is listed at 8HP and 6lbs torque while the S is 5HP and 6lbs torque?

The path is straighter with this but there is no protection from engine heat with this set up. COLD AIR IS BETTER

you can not see, but there is a cold air duct blowing right into the bottom of the filter. I have run my car at the track, and the intake still feels cold after several sessions. so, engine heat is not much of an issue in this situation, in traffic, it can be warmer, but that is traffic, not performance driving. And it is just an N-A engine, not forced induction where cold air really makes a bigger difference.

That's more like it ... How much was that intake? A shield from the engine would be nicer, but the direct shot would be FAR less restrictive than the stock intake tube.

Am I the only one that thinks that about the AFE? I was abotu to get one a couple of weeks ago, but didn't, I'm glad I didn't now that I noticed that.

Interesting thread, as my dad's 06 Cooper will be arriving soon. After looking at the Dyno's listed at AFE's site, I couldn't help but notice that though there are definately improvements at certain points along the rev range, the HP and torque curves were very wild up and down compared to the stock curves which were very linear and the power is actually less starting above 5000rpm: http://www.afefilters.com/images/54-10561.pdf

I think I paid $110 for the entire thing almost 3 years ago. I had a heat shield on it but found there was no benefit, so removed it. It truly stays cold, even on the track. You can find other companies that make something similar for about the same price as I think Moss no longer makes this, and the fitment from the older models is different for the '05 on. What I have fits only '02-'03-'04 I believe.

I just bought mine from Bavarian Autosport (www.bavauto.com).
I can't hear or feel a difference on my '05 MCS.
