R50/53 Single cluster ( Tach only ) and Dual cluster ( Tach and Speedo)
Single cluster ( Tach only ) and Dual cluster ( Tach and Speedo)
My R53 uses single cluster tach on steering wheel and default regular speedo on center console it came stock like this from factory.
Now I want to change my single cluster because the front lens is faded already meaning it's not clear. There's nothing wrong with the cluster it works it's just not clear.
Here are my questions:
1. Can I change this from single to Dual Cluster ( speedo and tach ) without changing the center console speedo. If so do I need to code it?
2. Now if I am going to buy a used single cluster or say buy a brand new one from MINI, do I need to have MINI program this? I am just replacing my existing single cluster tach with the same tach.
I've read some threads here but no one ever confirmed it will work or not.
Thank you.

From my reading and understanding, just swapping the single tach (w/same style) - 'plug 'n' play' = no programming required. However - (from my understanding) swapping over to a dual gauge onto the steering column in place of the single tach - sounds like there is more than plug 'n' play.
*Please someone more informed correct me if Im wrong*
Coincidently : I too would like to change out my single steering wheel mounted tach with the same. The dusty dirty conditions that I currently live in have ruined the clarity of my plastic lense. Largely impart due to me attempting to constantly dust the dirt off it. As a result scratching it up.
If you're considering just replacing your single tach with same - You might try a local salvage yard ($10) or Allmag to be sure you'll get a quality used one from them. I can only imagine what the dealer would charge (if they can get one) = $$!
notwithstanding :
I'm seriously considering having my scratched plastic lense replaced with glass instead.

Yeah man...it's just that plastic lens! Every time I look at it I get pissed it's cloudy---No joy!. Maybe there's a repair kit for this? just placing the front plastic lens?
As for the dual cluster, I guess I'll stay away. I am used to seeing both tach and speedo at the same time, makes my shifting accurate all the time, not with this speedo at center console. I am relying on the small print of numbers beneath the tach, i want the big needle pointing on numbers.
Brand new MINI - $750
Ebay: $40 to $150
+1 @arock
The center tach are easy to disassemble to remove the lens. Headlight polishing kit will probably do the trick.
IMO - would consider trying that first. In my case - my current tach functions perfectly so I'm not inclined to replace it with a salvage unit. The ones (lenses) I find out here in the desert are in really no better condition(if not worse), than what I already have.
I'm going to try and source glass in the meantime.
BTW: Those @Mforce listed are kinda crazy...even for an eBay used/salvage one.
Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky enough to have a salvage yard close by.....$10 -$20 U-Pull It.

I WISH there was a place that I could go searching around in for parts, that would be pretty epic.
I feel you.
I started hunting parts in FL at a Pull-A-Part a few years back. Then at various open to the public salvage yards after moving to metro Atlanta, GA where I'd signed up to be a member/patron.
I was fortunate to move (again) to an area out here in the SW where there is a 3+ mi stretch road of nothing but salvage yards. Most are not public access but Luckily for me there is a huge Pull-A-Part and U-Pull & Pay (open to the public) lots here that I just happen to be a member/patron of.
The number of 1st Gen Minis landing the yards have declined over the years. Cars don't rust out here but the unrelenting sun, heat, wind and dirt take a toll on parts....especially interior parts if exposed to the elements.
