5th Annual MINIs on the Dragon (May 3-6, 2007)The 5th Anniversary of the largest MINI event in the nation. Ready to take your turn trying to tame the Dragon?
I was wondering though, I saw on the site that Graham County is dry. How dry is it? I think back to my days traveling to NW Arkansa with counties that were sooo dry, if you were pulled over for any reason they would confiscate any alcohol in your car. It's not that dry is it?
Not that dry, this isn't the bible belt after all. We have a beer event at the resort so I'd think if they were that strict we wouldn't be having it. Not to mention that places like Fontana can now serve some types of alcohol so it has eased up recently.
visit http://www.minisonthedragon.info and go the lodging page. Fontana is where most things happen, but last year I stayed a Blue Water Mountain Lodge which was about 40 minutes away and it work out great.
I leave my command around mid april, and am supposed to report to my new one mid-may. So time wise I *could* attend, but it would be irresponsible of me to wait until my third/fourth week of 'transit time' to get to Guam to try and find housing for my wife and newborn.
When I posted this originally, I didn't have my orders, and was anticipating a 15 May report date for my new ship. It's 20 May for sure, and that may change things. If I'm able to ship my Mini from NC, Georgia, or Florida, I may be able to do MOTD07, drop the Mini off for shipping on the coast, and then fly to Guam from there. Would be tight, but I'd still have two weeks in Guam to check in and get stuff done then. Will have to talk to the wife an see how it goes... Probably will be a last minute decision, and will likely result in me shacking up with someone from DCMM.
So I am on the wait list for Fontana Village, but since I figure I have a better chance of playing pick-up sticks with my butt cheaks than actually getting a room, I better find something else.
I stayed at the Microtell last year also and it was great. Typical clean hotel room with free Wifi. The drive from Robinsville to the Dragon is about 20 minutes and about 35 to Fontana(though i think the backway is shorter).
I would highly recommend it, i'll probably be staying there again since the cheapest rooms at Tapoco seem to have shared bathrooms with the entire floor.....
My wife and I have stayed at the Microtel for all of the previous Dragon meets. The drive from there to Fontana is better than the dragon IMO. The 129, 28 and 143 loop is a great drive.
would be first timer here. Not sure if I'm going though because it's a long drive to make myself from Northern NJ and I don't know about lodging it can get expensive. Anyone know what the deal is about camping? I'd really love to be able to make it work out! I'd have to miss some school though
Imnuts55, check out the lodging section of my site Minis on the Dragon There is a bunch of camping links, but some cheap hotels. There is one place in Robbinsville called "The Overnighter" and has two kitchenette apartments for $29 for a single or $45 for a double. The "San-Ran" has rooms starting at $45.00

Nearly every year I've ended up caravanning with other MINIs for the trip- I'm certain you'd have opportunities to do the same. It's about 9-10 hours from Va Beach- but your route would be different I think, so it may not take much longer than that for you either. FRS radios make communication easy too.
One pitfall with caravanning though- if you get hooked up with more than 10 MINIs the pace begins to slow down as everyone tries to stay together. Apart from that, it's a blast to travel that way
And it's FAR from a boring experience being there BTW!!
I am headed from Orange County NY so if you want to meet up you can follow me down since I will be going through North NJ. I will be making a stop in Philly at Helix.
