F60 Oil filter housing replace
Oil filter housing replace
Well, looks like I need to replace the oil filter housing. (2018 with 100,000 kms/60,000 mi) I will go with a metal one and also replace the plastic water pipe connection at the same time.
Anyone done it specifically on a F60 willing to chime in? I viewed a few videos, some attacked it by removing the intake manifold, others attacked from the front by removing the fan shroud, etc. Any preference? Looks like lots less bolts on the intake…
Also a few (BIG) cautions about the an ac line being in the way on some models, but looking at it with a flashlight it doesn’t seem like it will be an issue, but hard to see with everything in place. Maybe wishful thinking!
Was seeping a few days ago, but seems to be getting worse. I just ordered the parts and now waiting for them….thinking about the best approach.

Hello,
Our video was made for the F55 F56 and F57. Its shared some with the F60 and F54, but you have to watch the ac line.
Just like this, some people did have Issues. and some did not.
"if you attack it from the bottom you can work it out. If you’re working while standing at the front bumper, here’s what I did. Pull the cooler as close to you as possible, then twist it right horizontally(keeping it upright). You should be able to pull it a bit more. From there, rotate it counterclockwise, pulling the filter up lefty loosy. Kinda gotta brute force it out. Reinstalling is just as difficult but same steps in reverse" just remove the upper bolt of the ac compressor. But u have to lose the belt first..

Factory procedure involves removing the intake manifold. When my time comes, that's the path I'll be taking. The more space you can give yourself, the easier it will be.

Thanks Nik, the step by step included in that thread looks to be of great value. I will approach it by removing the intake manifold, makes access to that pipe I am also replacing much easier I think. Will see how it goes, parts should be here early this coming week. I sure hope I don’t have huge ac line issues working in the driveway!

This is what it looked like once everything cleared out of the way.
Removed, couple of hard to reach bolts, but no AC line issues.
Looks like same failure as everyone else!
Well…procrastinated enough…but need the Mini back due to high gas prices…other vehicle uses premium also, but a few more cylinders!
I removed the intake manifold as planned, I think there is more room and visibility compared to radiator shroud, etc. It went ok, struggled with the BMW electrical connections in the cold (was doing outside, still snow on the ground). When I got to the oil filter housing, it didn’t appear that the AC line on the compressor would be in the way, and it wasn’t! That was my biggest fear. Struggled with a couple of bolts (2 & 3), #2 seemed better from below, #3 just had a lot of wiring in the way, lots.
The housing came out the top of the engine compartment without any issue.
I replaced with a non-standard aluminum housing, and also replaced the coolant pipe above it with an aluminum part also. Torquing the bolts tonight, will double check in the morning and put everything back together.
I may have, ok I did!, break one of those squeeze connections on the fuel purge line, will seek a replacement. I was thinking of a little bit of heat gun action prior to attempt squeezing them…it may have worked, but I didn’t do that.
Will touch base tomorrow after all is together, coolant and oil in, and fired up to confirm no leaks. Wish me luck!
So no AC line issues, maybe it is dependant on manufacture date?

Winter up here and for symptoms I noticed a bit of slush in front of the car, our driveway slopes towards the road and I always back in. I looked underneath but that compressed-bulldog hair belly pan masked any specific location. I checked coolant level and was low. Topped it up, tried to peer into the engine compartment but wasn’t a big help. Then I checked NAM. It was pretty cold so precluded much thought of fixing…no garage, so I reduced usage of the car while I investigated.
Did take it out for a bit longer drive one day…started out with heat and then there wasn’t any. Had some coolant in the back so topped up, heat came back and headed home.
After absorbing info from here and the net and better investigating the engine bay with a flashlight it was pretty clear the leak was from the oil filter housing area.
I would just keep an eye on coolant level and check underneath every so often, and of course a wet spot if you park in the same location regularly.

Had a few cold days and didn’t want to mess with the many plastic bits in the cold. Did get it all together and it started up and ran fine. I did top up the coolant through the pipe below the intake as much as possible prior to connecting the hoses. I had no issues with coolant not getting where it should, watched it warm up, kept coolant in the reservoir, and had the heat on. Heard the occasional gurgle, few bubbles in the reservoir, all went well.
Warmed it up, went for a ride and did an oil level check. All was good and no signs of leaks. Phew! Glad that is done for a while. I will check coolant daily for a bit and then taper off, but think that repair is completed and good. At least I got the oil change done…that is a bonus and was next on the list.
