Turbo for CA

I have a 2015 R60 JCW auto and got the engine malfunction light. It went off but my dealer says it probably from a failing turbo. Of course I'm not going to pay dealer turbo prices! Since I might need a new turbo, what do you guys recomend for a nice upgrade. I don't have tune yet but am looking for one and why not add an upgraded turbo since I need one. I drive quite a bit, approximatley 25k per year so reliability is a must. I love the car but it is a little slow for my taste, what turbo do you recommend while still being able to pass CA smog inspection. I'm not looking for a screamer but something a little more peppy and fun, it's a R60 after all. I don't care to much about visual inspection but more about the computer readings that might fail me. All of the turbo threads don't say much about passing the CA smog check. If I do get a new turbo, what else might I need to make the extra HP work, a CAI?

Bummer about the potential turbo failure. I had to replace my a few years back, but luckily it was under extended warranty... I feel your pain. There are plenty of options, just depends on budget

Borge Warner Airwerks $1300+
JMTC S42 $1257
on the budget end you can get a rebuilt for about $700-$800 or a factory replacement for $1000

The smog passing isn't so much a concern as it already has a turbo, just needed a new one. its when you get in to the Cat removal that it becomes an issue.

So any additional mods for increased hp? *rubs hands together*
Depends. We've got a 2011 R60 and 2013 R57, both n18b engines and I can buy two of everything. which has made owning these two a lot of fun. Everything in the engine bay that allows better flow for the turbo has been done, while keeping us Cal compliant. All M7 silicone hoses, hot and cold side, even the snorkel leading to the CAI (always a must for turbo engines). What you don't see is the larger intercooler (rev9, I believe) and exhaust (which is a Coffin muffler from Visalia Ca) we also cut off the resonator at the back, before the muffler.

Anything from this point would be a stage 1 tune. Oh, on a quick side note, look up the the Sprint Booster.
"So, What Exactly Does the Sprint Booster Do? The short answer is, it is an amplifier, boosting the accelerator pedal sensor signal by about 30% which makes the accelerator pedal about 30% more sensitive." (taken from the MINIMania website) Once I installed this it was a completely different car. Felt faster too, but only because of how it works.

Under the hood of the R57

I hope this information was helpful.

@frankthetank77 quick highjack: how do you like the M7 catch can? I need to add one, and it seems like a super simple, straight forward kit.

while it was extremely simple to install, be aware that it is actually not a welcome modification in CA. We just had both of our cars smogged and we should have failed due to having them installed. We will remove them for smog next time.

Thanks for pointing out smog. Hadn't thought about that. Seems like with the hoses provided it can easily be swapped out for smog?

Yes, they are. Just keep them in a safe place and remember where you put them. lol!

As for our engines... we added the M7 Hight Flow Intake hose which has a port for the crank case and NOW I'm hoping I remember where I put them to swap them back in for next time.

This kind of think drives me crazy about California, if the catch can keeps the system closed loop and isn't venting to atmosphere why on earth would they deny it. Just add it to the extremely long list of reasons why I don't live there (Although the weather sure is nice)

Right!?! It's it keeps getting stupider and stupider as the days go on. Where I live, we've been on a 100ºF+ for several weeks now... the coast/Bay Area/San Diego, pretty much cooler than here any day of the year.
