Thermostat replacement interval

I have a 2013 CMS All4. Is there a recommended replacement interval for the thermostat? I recently saw the Wheeler Dealers episode in which they flip a 2004 Hardtop MC 40 with ~96K on the odometer. They performed the "100K service", including replacing the thermostat. Is that part of an official 100K service or simply something they thought should be done? When I look for a maintenance schedule for my car, all I find is information about the CBS system.

On the 2013 the thermostat is part of the housing. Our 2012 failed at 30,000 miles and was covered under warranty. The dealer paid for a rental car for 9 weeks during the part shortage. Here is a picture of the thermostat housing. I replaced one in our prior 2010 Clubman myself and it took a few hours. I have not heard a consistent mileage or time frame to replace it. There is a sensor in it that will create a fault code. Ours did when it failed.

Thanks, that's what I found on ECS when I searched. A lot of integrated bits on this car: thermostat, fuel filter, PCV. Probably saves the company money but not so much for owners. I guess what I'm asking is at what point it makes sense to replace the thermostat as preventive maintenance. Is there an official recommendation? Is there a wisdom-of-the-forum recommendation?

That works, but I'm hoping to do it on my terms rather than on the thermostat's.

There is no "recommended" interval. Ours failed at 30,000 miles. If you are mechanically inclined you can replace it yourself for under $150 for the housing and coolant.

Thanks. I'm planning to do a coolant flush when the weather warms up. That's the time to do it though I'll only be at about 70000 miles.

That’s a good time to do it if you plan to. I recommend picking up one of these if you don’t already have one. It makes the job so much easier!

Yeah, I need to get one of those.

Last week I ordered the Schwaben vacuum coolant refill tool. That should also make the job a little easier (and more foolproof).
