R60 JCW Exhaust upgrade on a Cooper S
Hey BRICK,
In my opinion, for the high price, the JCW is a somewhat glorified OEM system. There are plenty of other vendors that produce very high quality systems made out of TIG-welded T304, that are of larger diameter size and provide great sound and better flow, for equal to less total cost than buying the JCW system and having the dealer(stealer) install it. Good Luck!

Thanks so much for the info... i'm pretty naive to the underworkings of a car so any help is much appreciated.
Do you have any suggestions at a lower cost? Also i was looking into the JCW because i figured my warranty would still be intact.. if i install a 3rd party would that void the warranty?
thanks again!

BRICK,
No, the installation of an exhaust system will not void your warranty. If your main focus is on price, then you will have to restrict yourself to the purchase of an "axle-back" system, rather than a "cat-back" system. This means that the system only replaces the rear-section of the exhaust system, rather than including the piping leading from the 2nd cat & resonator.
The axle-back systems are made by "Megan Racing" and "Borla", which are still not exactly cheap. However, you were considering the JCW, which can cost up to $800-1000, not including install!! For that kind of money, you could buy a axle-back or even cat-back system and may even have money leftover for a downpipe or some other mod.
Ultimately, if you are on the fence by the cost of a system, I would be patient, wait it out and save up a little more money to get the right system from the get-go. I know sometimes you are excited to just buy a system with the money on hand, but it makes more sense to wait it out. A high-quality T304 system will outlast the car! Exhaust is something you really only buy once, so save up, and splurge on a nice system.

i have the cat back JCW exhaust on my 2012 CMS and have been very happy with it. i installed it myself and it took no time at all, cut the pipe in one place, drop the old system, hang the new, clamp it up, and voila. if you do a little digging in some older posts mrs pro has a video which outlines the entire thing.
i bought mine when seawell still sold parts so it was extremely competitively priced.

Awesome, thats good to know! did you just take it to a local garage to install?
I'm currently running the JCW cat back on my 03 JCW, no cat though. The JCW exhaust has been on this car since it was released by Mini and it has held up really well.
I also have the Borla, which I only use in the summer as I find it's a little too loud for road trips when the windows are up.
----
Borla exhaust sound clip with Jackson Racing catless header.

The JCW will add horsepower over the stock S, but not as much as the Borla. The Borla is considerably lighter than the JCW. Additionally, the JCW has done a better job of standing up to my mods than the Borla.

I did the JCW Exhaust and it's definitely a louder pop and gurgle when the sport button is on. If it's off, it's pretty much the same as the standard exhaust sound and is just as easily drowned out by road and tire noise and the stereo. You should also expect your exhaust note to vary depending on your elevation. I live in Colorado and at first I was somewhat disappointed when I first put them on as I could really not tell a difference... The I went on a road trip back home down south to see the folks and the exhaust note got louder and louder as I got to a lower elevation.
It's a louder and better sounding exhaust note when you are standing outside the car, but not really much more noticeable when you're driving until you let of the gas or on downshifts... Then you can hear the loud pops.. I would definitely tell you to listen to one in person as watching a video will not give you an accurate example and you won't really be able to tell what actions you do in the car that make the sound more audible. I also think many people would think there was something mechanically wrong with the car due to the sound... It's kinda similar to a backfire from an old, dying engine.
As far as HP gains, I really don't think it made any difference. it's mainly just the cosmetic look of the exhaust tips and the enhanced exhaust note being a little more pronounced. The biggest difference is the loud pops you'll get.
