Can I replace just one tire?

My left, rear tire has a nail and it,s close to the sidewall so I think I'll have to put a new one on. The other 3 tires still are very good, only 4,000 miles on them so far. Can I just replace the one bad tire or should I get two and replace in pairs? I have an S All4.

If you can make it the same brand and style as the other 3. I flatted a tire as I was getting off the freeway taking wife' clubman to first service. Had dealer put and new one on as the other didn't have many miles. Same brand, style and size. no problem

On the back yes but not on the front. Given the front wheels are connected via the diff I wouldn't want different diameter tyres.

If there are only 4K on the tires, check new vs old with a tire tread gauge.
If they're really close (within 1/32" - 2/32" tread depth), they should be fine
front or back. If there's more than 3/32 difference, best to put on the back
as noted above.

Actually, a difference of a couple /32" of tread makes a very tiny difference
of diameter, percentage wise. The change in wheel speeds is like driving
on a very, very slight curve, which most roads you drive on have, anyway.

Yeah, a difference in tire pressure has more effect on rolling diameter than 1-2 /32's

I replaced a single tire and the other three had over 20k on them. This is on an All4. Budgetary constraints yelled louder than my engineering degree.

Seriously I wouldn't worry about it if there is still a reasonable amount of life between the tread and wear bars.

Unless you have a tire warranty the dealer is a very expensive place to buy tires.

Definitely measure the tread and see where they are at. If it's not a big difference, you should get able to get away with it.

tirerack.com will "shave" a new tire to match the OD of part worn tires

yeah i know i usually get all my tires from tire rack but my mini dealership gave me a quote for the pirelli p7 all season RF that's only $23 more compared to tirerack (but tirerack i gotta pay $15 for shipping and also my dealer gives me 10% off everything so it's not too bad) tirerack does have a $60 off promo now but it's for 4 tires

As bmwr606 said, Tire Rack will shave tires. I had them do once once when a tire was severely cut on the sidewall. You just tell them how much and they will do the rest.

yep just saw the post from bmwr606 (thanks for info!) and read it on their website, I just ordered a tire tread gauge on amazon and I'm going to get a reading on the other 3 tires. if it's only 1-2 off from 10/32' ill just have the dealer change the one bad tire, if it's more ill order from tirerack and have them shave it off. thanks for all the help guys
