I wonder if this is what caused the fire that member "alanwells" experienced as detailed in his December 10, 2011 post?

The timing's right for a possible problem with that CM.

This is a really funnily worded recall from MINI it specifies the N14 engine and from what I have understood is their was not a countryman made without the valvetronic update (n20?).

It includes the All4 because it has the "S" engine with the Turbo. The electric water pump that cools the turbo (the noise you hear while walking away from your car after you turn it off) and works after the car is shut down. Probably best to garage outdoors until fixed. Now that there is a definite cause that makes sense.

Oh and you guys with the peeling trim may not be included as the later 2011's are not included.

Figures. Just purchased my 2011 CM All4 and will be picking him up this Saturday. So I guess we wait and see if it goes?

Production dates on the Cooper S Countryman and ALL4 were November 2010 - January 2011. Production dates are different for each model.

CM recall cutoff production date

The specific cutoff date for the CM recall is production "through January 18, 2011." Any CM produced after that is not recalled (they haven't listed VINs yet).
So is the "Production Date" on my sticker the date production was started or finished?

Start date... It means you have the faulty parts on board.

The way recalls usually work: you will get a letter from MINI advising you to make an appointment to get recall work done. It will be based on your VIN, and if you are OK you will not get a letter.

Fortunately for me...no I don't. My production date was 2/3/11 and the recall cutoff is 1/18/11.

Bad News

I was hoping this recall dealt with the engine bay fire member "alanwells" posted about in December. Unfortunately, his post stated his CM was "built in April 2011," and the recall apparently only covers cars built through January 18, 2011.

Zuman,

I'll make a bet that alanwells engine fire was caused by the same issue. MINI is probably limiting the extent of the recall to save money. I know that sounds pessimistic, but I have lost all faith in MINI when it comes to handling product quality issues. My car was also built in April 2011, and I bet it has the suspect components too. When MINI shows me what is different between the component in my car, vs the failed components, then I'll believe them. Until then, I don't.

mark,
my guess is that bmw/mini would have to show the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration what models were affected and how they rectified it to the satisfaction of the NHSTA, otherwise, the NHSTA would be held accountable.

I would like to think that MINI/BMW has their customer's best interest in mind with this issue. The reality is they have their financial best interest in mind, and that requires them to 'develop' data limiting the extent of the issue. I've work for years on the supply side to the automotive industry, and I know that problems like these are difficult to exactly identify the extent. Especially when you are talking about a multi level supply chain sourced in multiple countries.
If you read the article, they say "certain design features" and "under certain conditions"... I'd like to know what features and what conditions they are talking about. Also, what exactly did they do to the design features to fix the problem, and how do I know my vehicle has one of these new design features.

MINI does not have a good track record for these type of problems, and I don't see this one being any different.

5 weeks and counting since the fire - still waiting for MINI to tell me the results of their inspection which was supposed to happen last Tuesday. I'll post an update as soon as I have the official word.

The location of the fire in my engine compartment seemed to match the pattern of other fire reports I've seen that have been linked to the smoldering water pump, so a connection seems likely.
