i know back in the old days it meant rear defrost on the back window. as my classic charger was a florida car and had no rear defrost where a michigan car had rear defrost and it was not optional it was just part of being a northern climate car........ could be something to that effect.

Interesting. My All4 was delivered new in Cincinnati and it's spec'd as an 823 Hot Climate Version. It does have a rear window defroster as "standard" in addition to the extra Cold Weather Package items.

Only applies to cars delivered in Pittsburgh.

Lots of references to the option on the web - both BMW and MINI. One reference to a part on Amazon that has to do with a valve. No definitive answer, yet.

As Sealy said, there are hundreds of web references, primarily for BMW, but very little definitive information. The most specific reference I found (to the 823 HOT weather version) was this BMW post:
I have for sale BMW part number 17427523259 complete fan, blades, motor, and shroud, for E90 cars. Almost brand new, only 150 miles on it before it was pulled from a 325i race project. This is the 400 watt model fan, it will not fit 335i or vehicles fitted with option code 823 Hot Climate Version, you will need a 600w fan.

I'd say that getting the Hot Climate Version with a more powerful fan would not, in general, be a bad thing! I wonder what other tweaks are implied by the code...

so today, i did a really stupid thing...i called Ask-Mini about clarification on the 842 item...they told me to call my dealership and they would know more. (this same answer has been given to me to many times) ughhh....why bother to have a number and pay someone to answer the phone just to say...call the dealership.

Just got off the phone today with Mini CDA......waited for 4 weeks for an answer....every week they would get back to me telling me another 5 days.....and here we are 4 weeks later.....so the issue is....my F56 2015 ( still locked up in the compound waiting for release) was built for CDA with Hot Climate Version....I found out this on my build order...I told Mini CDA that we are not considered a Hot Climate, but a Cold Climate. My 2008 was built with Cold climate version. My 2013 was built with a Hot Climate Version. My 2013 confronted the first cold day of winter, the thermostat went...poof...and the engine light with a 'x' thru it come on....12 days in service...nobody could figure what to do....until German Engineers sent a new software update to fix the engine light. No more problems since this fix....so my question is.....my 2015 F56 was built with the Hot Climate version....Mini Engineers says it is OK.....come November 2014, I am told that the new build will now include for Cold Climate, a new or added Air Filter Housing.....I am told this will not affect the performance of my pre Nov.2014 build. This change will "help with the rare circumstances of very large accumulations of snow build up".....I am not clear what all this means....do I still take delivery when my car is released pending EPA certification ??? Does one buy into this answer from them? Anybody help please and thank you.

You live in Canada and aren't familiar with "the rare circumstances of very large accumulations of snow build up" ?? The only thing odd about that is the word 'rare'....

Why not take delivery of your car? If the problem repeats itself then MINI Canada and/or your dealer will fix it.
