new-to-me 2004 MC40

I picked up an MC40 at a great price last week. Delightful little car, and more practical than another in my garage (2002 BMW M roadster). It's missing some of the commemorative stuff (side numbers, etc.). I assume I can order replacements just so I have them? They won't be going on the car.

I'm looking forward to meeting fellow owners. Seems to be a good crowd.

Maintenance round started. 44,000 miles on the car, it was driven! Maintenance records sketchy, I'm calling the original dealer on Monday to see what they have. All I found in the glove compartment is an oil service at ~ 13,000 miles. I replaced the air filter Thursday night, and it looks to have been the original. Plenty of black soot. Dirt and spider web in the airbox. All cleaned up now.

Oil and oil filter being changed this weekend. I'll take a sample for Blackstone, but I've no idea how many miles are on the oil nor what oil was used. Hopefully I can get that information from the original dealer before I send the sample in.

Intercooler will come off today to get a thorough cleaning. I'm powdercoating the bellows clamps.

Rear seat delete kit goes in this weekend. Still debating what to cover it with, carpet or dome-topped rubber. I'm leaning toward the latter at the moment. Anyone else install a rear seat delete kit and cover it with carpet? Say truvette?

M7 strut brace arrived today, but I have some strut tower hammering to do before I install it.

You can get the decals probably with a VIN #.

I doubt you can get the OEM magnetic door numbers. I believe they were discontinued.

I'll check with my parts contact. Anyone have the part numbers? I'm still waiting for a newer copy of the ETK to arrive, and have a bad feeling a neighbor nabbed it along with my Peake R5/EMX. Sigh, USPS says it was delivered, but I've not seen it and my neighbor says he didn't get it in his box.

Looks like the original air filter. Flash from the camera is deceiving, the soot is more black than this picture.

Airbox before I cleaned it.

Airbox cleaned up a bit.

New filter dropped in.

That would be this one.

Dealers have all the maintenance records networked through a computer system. Take the key to any BMW/MINI dealer and they can print out the maintenance records.

I asked the dealer to stamp the maintenance book, they said that it was un-necessary since the keys and dealer network has all the records electronically stored. I insisted and they did stamp my book.

You must provide a MC40 VIN Number to order replacement parts that are specific to the MC40 edition.

Yes, but the nearest MINI dealer is an hour away. The local BMW dealer can't do it, unfortunately.

Not a problem, I have an exceptional parts contact for BMW/MINI parts and of course a VIN.

The decals were available as of a couple weeks ago as I bought two sets.

The parts person helping me said there was a part number for the door numbers, but did not check to see if they were available as I have the originals.

If you do decide to get the decals, you might want to consider having them mounted on magnetic sign material. That's what I did with one set of mine. I can take them off or leave them on as I choose.

Good luck!

Oil and filter change in progress. I decided to powdercoat the oil filter cup and the outside of the 36mm socket in 'safety yellow'.
