New Owner looking for a mechanic in NY/LI

Greetings, I recently got back my 2010 Mini Cooper S , My ex tried turning it in without telling me, so I went down to the dealership with the title and drove it home. I am a long time Land Rover forum member, and have/ had Defenders /Discos/Classics so I am used to cars not running like they are suppose to !
When I picked up the Mini it only started when I put the gas pedal to the floor and there are a bunch of check engine lights on. I wasn't able to clear the codes, the computer isn't connecting to the car ? (ABS, speedometer isn't working, check engine light, cam shaft sensor to name a few ).
Looks like the Mini had been sitting since mid-summer , not sure if anyone can give me some direction as I don't want to go to a dealership $$$. I live in Long Island / Suffolk County if anyone has a reputable mechanic who get me sorted out I would appreciate it - Cheers ! Tom

Welcome back. My guess is the battery is on its way out and you tried to start it after a while and the low voltage can make all kinds of problems. That or maybe a mouse or rodent chewed on some wire while it was setting.

check engine lights

Thanks for your quick response, I am assuming the car had to be jumped at some point since it sat for months in the cold. I guess I will start with new battery /plugs/oil - the only thing I don't like is that you have to pump the gas for it to turn over - Tom

Welcome. My guess is that the battery is low and you are feeding air to start or the HPFP is going goofy because of the low voltage or something.

Welcome to the forum

Sounds like my ex wife has family in Long Island I didn't know of. Something she'd do.

Update

so i brougght the mini to a local foreign car guy and after going ob=ver the car he found that the cam shaft sensor was DISCONNECTED - with that starting issue fixed he moved onto the ABS light - ABS pump is not communicating with the car - he couldnt find anything else diconnected and i think a new pump goes for 2700$.(and we are not even sure the pump is bad ) I am thinking that the used car manager at FREEPORT BMW CHRIS CARIMA wasnt happy that he had to return a car he took in on a new purchase( LOST $$) , he had to ship it back to the dealer and disconnected / messed with a few things. Also when i picked it up the mats were gone , license plate holder gone and only 1 key and only the half that starts the mini -- I wish I was there when she dropped the car off and it didn't sit around -

Question for the group, If the car sat for that long, wouldn't the gas have gone bad and caused some of the symptoms described?

I was thinking that also , when I picked up the car it had about 1/4 tank. When I left the dealer the gauge seemed to be fluctuating anytime I made a turn or was on a hill. I filled it up as soon as I could and only drove it to the mechanic shop. The main issue now is that the abs is not communicating to the rest of the car, no sppedo , no milage and light stays on - THANKS IN ADVANCE

Welcome to the forum

Sounds like it needs a little love.

I would suggest looking into the brakes (sensors and wiring connections, also make sure the wheels still have the TPSs in them). Sort List...

Just a have to tackle each issue one at a time, until it is sorted out.

Best of luck.

Motor On!
