Oil Cooler Install

I purchased an oil cooler from Madness Motorworks and it appears at one time they used to send an installation guide on a CD. I did not receive a CD or any literature to help me during the install.

I would like to ask if anyone has the installation guide or the CD? I am willing to pay the costs for shipment both ways. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me with this.

What year MINI do you have? Might have luck contacting Madness and asking them about the installation instructions.

I have a 2005 Mini Cooper S. Yes I have received an installation guide from Madness Motorworks but I was hoping for more details such as provided in a installation video or a CD. Thanks for the reply.

Guessing since so few folks have computers with CD players, they stopped sending them...
Check YouTube?

Previously Mini Madness (now Madness Motorworks) provided an instructional CD with their products but the CD just contained various installation guides burned onto a CD. I suspect the CD contained nothing more than you already received. Search the web for Mini Cooper Oil Cooler Installation. SneedSpeed has some YouTube videos.

Also you might want to think about adding a thermostat to the oil cooler so you do not run the oil too cold.

Being a novice, I wasn't aware you can install a thermostat in an oil cooler. Do oil coolers come with a housing or area for a thermostat? I haven't installed the oil cooler yet so if a thermostat would help, I'd be willing to look into that.

The issue is the mini has a oil to coolant oil cooler as stock....it helps to preheat the oil in the winter and cool it in the summer....
When you add a separate cooler, you will often NEVER get the oil hot enough to boil off moisture....
The only people that REALLY need an oil cooler that is better than the factory unit are folks that spend LOTS of time on the track....
For many the best option is to simply change the oil after a track day if it got very hot....
Some folks see the oil temp spike when WOT on a long hard pull....this is normal, and you see it more on a car with a reduction pulley....simply put the pulley causes the water pump to turn faster than designed....result in cavation around the vanes (vacume bubbles) when at redline for long pulls....this results in lower coolant flow, so the oil suddenly is not getting cooled by the coolant in the coolant loop in the stock cooler....since the block is cast-iron, it can hold the heat fine....so no damage...that's why folks will idle their cars after a track or autocross event....it helps keep the coolant circulating to cool down the motor evenly.
If you do get a extra oil cooler, be prepared to cover it with a cover of some type in cold weather... ZIPTIE a piece of cardboard over it maybe....and know it takes LONGER to get the oil up to normal operating temperature before you drive hard since the coolant loop is not there to moderate the temps in cold weather.
For most folks, the stock cooler is fine unless the car is primarily a track toy.

One bit of info...just assuming your u have a gen1 r53 or r52s from the kit....
Not sure of anything on the gen2 or gen3 cars!!

I only wish I had been made aware of this before purchasing the oil cooler, but whats done is done. I plan on installing it and from your comments and others I've seen I can cover the radiator when it's winter, but where I live there are too seasons...hot and hotter. One of the primary reasons for getting the oil cooler was to keep the engine from getting too hot.

I actually found a oil cooler thermostat that is placed inline between the adapter plate and the oil cooler radiator. I am leaning towards purchasing the thermostat so that I don't have to keep placing or removing something to block the radiator manually. I appreciate all those who responded. Thanks.

Sounds like you found a thermostat. Should be something like one of these:

I am not sure how you plan to use or modify your car but as Zippy said you probably do not need an external oil cooler and it is just a pain to deal with if you really do not need it. Coming from other cars to the Mini Cooper, I thought I needed to add an external oil cooler for performance driving but found out that the stock heat exchanger was adequate for street, Auto-X, and a little track day fun. If it is really hot where you live maybe it makes some sense if you are going to be doing track days.

If the oil cooler kit is new, call George (Madness Motorworks) and ask him if you can return the oil cooler kit. If you have had it for awhile (more than 30 days) and George is not excited about accepting a return; one option would be to make a deal with George to return the oil cooler for credit to purchase other parts from him. We can then help you spend your money on other mods.
