Looking to join the ranks but need guidance

hello all

I been lurking the forum the past 2 weeks reading up, researching, researching,
Anyway I come down to finding a mini with the basic options i want with a few added and its CPO to boot. But the dealer is firm on its price. Im looking to get a 09 cooper s with 20k automatic with the cold weather package, prem, sport, and convien..with nav and comfort bluetooth.. dealer asking 27k now is that a good price and Im just being cheap for asking 1500 off before ttl.. I am kinda new to the car buying thing... since this is my first time alone buying a car. thanks for your time. Hope to own one soon

If you are talking about an '09 with 20,000 miles I wouldnt pay $27,000. At the most $24K and only if it is in like new condition.

That sounds WAY high for a car with 20k miles and those options.. that's gotta be close to new pricing. Even $24k seems generous to me. Research what similar cars are selling for (cars.com, autotrader.com) and I think you'll find that number to be out of whack. Use that as ammunition to try to negotiate a reasonable price, if this car really meets all your wants/desires. Good luck!

Might as well get a new one for that kind of money... or find a cheaper 09 but from a private seller cuz the dealers get crazy with their used car prices

There is merit with considering getting a new MINI vs the '09 with 20K on it. First of all, while the '09 is probably fine, you really do not know the full history of any nits the previous owner had with the car nor if there was the slight chance that he abused the car - but it's got to be a certified used car and it being a recent model...It's covered by warranty either way. But a new car will have a fresh full warranty and that may be worth something, certaunly a benfit. Second, I agree with others that $27K seems a bit high for a car that has 20K miles on it, with a new car, you are definitely paying more but you get benefit of any tweaks they have done to irradicate one or two of the nits people complain about a bit with in general with any earlier model. Third, unless you are buying the car with full cash, you are likely to get a better loan rate with a new vs older car from your bank and it is likely that with a new car, the dealership may have more favorable/special loan rates to move the new cars. But on the down side, as far as I know, the MINI dealerships give very little off the sticker price on new cars. About the best it seems one can do is perhaps $500 - $750 dollars off sticker. At least that was the case with mine. Rcmd also, try and push as much as you can in paying for it with cash onto one of your rebated credit cards. That way, you get about 1% or so back and if you are prepared to pay it off within the 25 day or so billing cycle, then it is only of benefit to you. But they have limits as to how much they will allow you to put on a credit card and some/many may finance most of the car cost, so they would not want to put it on a credit card.

In my case, I was paying for it in full and I was also getting all the extended warranties. The sales guy told me I could put upwards of $3K on the credit card. I asked if i could also charge the warranties as well to my credit card since service and mtn you would normally pay for by credit card when getting that service. He thought about it and said that sounded like it made sense. But later when my MINI finally came in and I met with the finance guy to straighten out the paperwork. He indicated I could only charge the $3K to the credit card. I then told him the above discussion I had a month or longer ago with the sales guy about also charging the warranties......The finance guy first disagreed but then caved in. I recall charging about $6K to the credit card...which I then paid in full when the bill came due about 30 days later. So...perhaps that saved me....okay...only about $60...but enough for my wife and I to celebrate getting the new MINI...going out for a dinner plus.

I always say go with your gut feeling, but gauging right now that you can get a fully loaded Mini Cooper S for under 20k 1-2 years old with low mileage, I would look elsewhere.

I might have to search out of state next. Dont know how far I might have to go.

I just dont get it thou. With what the dealers are offering with the Option Credit Program credit for Auto Transmission $1,125 + $500 from dealer brings my total down towards what my quote above is. yet they dont want to do it. Thats ordering from mini.. not taking car from lot. I guess I am just new to alll this. thanks for the advice guys. I do appreciate your comments

I'm new to the mini thing but not to buying cars.I just bought my first mini week ago looked hard for a perfect car at a perfect price. there is some real nice 06-09 minis for 20k and under i found. depends on how far you want to travel. just do your homework and get lots and lots of pics and answers to any ?'s you have before you take the trip and are disappointed.
