Question on new car mileage...

In researching and studying up on this car, I've come across alot of stuff online. I'm sure that some of it is stuff and some of it is crap...

One blog/thread/post I had read somewhere stated that it wasn't unusual for cars that were special ordered to have a few miles on them... Something about them being tested. Some reports stated they only had 3 or 4 miles and others said they had well over 150.

I don't see a problem with a few miles on it, but 150+ miles seems excessive for a new car... special ordered at that. My understanding is that a car can be sold as "new" as long as it has less than 1500 test drive miles and has never been sold by the dealer.

However, if I ORDER a car and wait this long, I don't want that many miles on it. It's not going to be test driven by anyone at the dealer as it's already sold.

Is this misinforamtion?

How many miles was on everyone elses' car?

Had 10 on mine when I picked it up.

I would agree that 150 seems pretty high on a special ordered car...

Mine had 4 I think when I first saw it at the dealer, then my salesman drove it the 100 miles or so to my home.
That was difficult for me, but I've gotten over it. He actually promised me he would be very gentle with it.

My new MINI (picked her up just last saturday) had well under 100. I want to say 30-50, but I don't remember exactly.

But then I ran the odometer up to 1900+ on the drive home.

Yes. I live in a different state than the dealer and they did the tax and registration run for me. To save me going back a second time (I had to go see it when it arrived and sign all the paperwork) he drove it to me.

Cars do get pulled at the end of the line for in plant testing. Every car gets a short test just to make sure everything is working, and a few get pulled for emission testing which puts a few more miles on.
Lewis was delivered with less than 10 miles. Some dealers will take cars for a short shake down lap or have to drive a little farther to get gas.
And then it is possible that a car will show up and someone will really want to test drive a car with those options or something or a salesperson won't know it was an order and it will see the road. Different but the same; when my ex was looking for a truck the salesguy let him testdrive a truck that was an order to be delivered the next day since we couldn't find another with that engine/trans/final drive anywhere else - salesguy just made him promise to take it up the road and back and be nice and rode along.

I think I'd be fairly p*ssed if they let someone take my special ordered car for a test drive.

Well, me too, but it's not really yours until you drive away in it.

I would be put out if someone drove my car at the dealer. I had already put a deposit on the car and that makes it mine.
My Mini had 5.3 miles on it when I picked it up.

Mine had 12 miles when I picked up from the dealer, I asked my MA why so many miles.. like everyone else said, appearently dealer/or even VDC, had to test drive and make sure everything is ok. When mine arrived at VDC, it only had 4 miles. (According from MA)

Mine wasn't a special order, but it only had around ~18 miles on it when I bought it out of dealer stock. And I think I put 4-6 of those miles on it when I test drove it.

I was watching a documentary about a GM assembly line and it stated that the odometers are started with less than zero miles so that after the standard test the cars go through the odometer would read about zero. I suppose cars subjected to random extra testing would show additional miles and things like if the car was stored at a third site between manufacture (or getting off the boat) and shipment to the dealership as well as the dealership itself, if they have to move the car a lot or send it through different inspections.

The wife of one of my friends works for a Subaru dealership. He told me that when they were driving a new WRX between dealerships the odometer "wasn't active" until the PDI was done. He put on close to 100km and there was no registering of this distance on the odometer.

I've know this guy for quite some time and do trust what he says. I'm not sure if other car companies do the same.

Any one else hear about this? I always though that the odometer was always 'on' once the car was built but he tells me otherwise.

Not sure if other car dealer do this, but it is very easy to disconnect wires to let the odometer not running, especially japanese cars. Couple my friends want to keep their Civic miles low, they disconnect odometer wires. I know this for fact because when I ride in their cars, odometer will not run, neither did the speed odometer needle, so you really don't know how fast you going unless you follow the car in front or next to you.

That was a lot easier to do back when most speedometers were cable-driven off of the car's transmission. With the MINI, the speedometer is controlled by the car's computer, using inputs from the wheel-speed sensors. You could disconnect the wheel-speed sensors to keep your odometer from recording miles, but you'd also lose ABS, DSC, ELDC (if equipped), TPMS (in the first-gen and early second-gen cars), and you'd probably get a whole slew of warning lights as well.
