Fast question axle and cv joint

Hi guys,

While looking over my suspension I found that my cv boot was toast. So tonight I followed the DIY and decided to take out just the CV leaving the (cup) and spline inside the transmission.

So the question...as soon as I released the clamp...The cv practically just fell into my hands. Is that normal? Isn't there anything besides the boot holding together?

I didn't see anything fall out and all the videos on YouTube show a similarly thing...just feels like there should be something holding it together?

When it's in the car the suspension limits the travel. Seems like my experience as well.

Thanks David. I confirmed this with another forum member as well. I also wanted to update the thread for anyone searching in the future.

CV boot replacement is actually really quite easy.

1) with car on ground, take off center cap and loosen axle nut - it's in at 134 lb feet of torque so might need someone to step on brake

2) jack up car and place on jack stand - no way in hell should you ever do this or any other job with just a jack

3) unbolt ball joint and tie rod from steering knuckle

4) tap the axle back through the hub - carefully

5) pull the axle out - if inner cv boot you can opt to just leave the cup in the transmission and remove the clip holding the boot onto the cup..the axle will literally fall into your hands (it will be gooey and messy)

6) remove the circ-clip from end of the axle

7) use a 3 prong puller to remove the bearing. (You could use a mallet and a screw driver ) but that might damage something ... Don't risk it when any auto parts store will rent you the tool for free.

8) replace the cv boot

9) use 24mm socket (1" is fine too) to tap the bearing back on gently (it fits exactly over the bearing)

10) replace circ-clip

11) place small clamp on cv and clamp (the special tool is $15 and worth it)

12) clean out cup of dirt etc.. Pack with grease

13) pack cv boot and bearings with grease

14) reinstall cv and firmly seat cv boot over cup.

15) slide clamp on - and position facing down - so you can access the piece that needs clamping from underneath car - clamp

16) reverse steps 3 and 4

Awesome write up.

I'm lucky where I live, there's a place called a1 drive shaft really close to my house that does it for $40. $80 if it needs a rebuild.

Would definitely do it myself otherwise
