PENFED question

GAdgett and flaboy, QUESTION:

Ok, so I was on the website getting ready to do my online app w/ PENFED and well, what the heck is the payment saver? did either of you go this route?.. it seems like a 'lease' or 'balloon' loan type of payment, right?......

It is a balloon loan. Lower monthly payments with a large final payment. I did not consider it. With everything crazy in the financial markets, I felt it prudent to have a fixed payment at a fixed rate. Since PenFed offers the same 4.75% from 24-72mo, I chose to finance longer than usual (for me) to lower my payments. I can then make additional principal payments to reduce the term of the loan.

Smart guy.

I stayed away from it as well. 4.75% is pretty damn good.

Weirdly easy process- I entered my VIN # and went through the steps. Saw it was approved online, but expected a day or two real approval to come in. I called today and they said the check is sent out already and my 1st payment is dec 4th.

Very interesting. I'll have the car by then (it works perfect, actually), but strangely easy.

well my car was discharged in NYC on Oct. 24 and my MA still can not give me any info on where it is. In fact, I know more than he does! The best he can tell me is he might know something next week, and if notchis sales manager will make a query at the VDC. A little frustrating......

I'm a PenFed and USAA member, and FenFed has come a long way with their customer service in the last decade. In my mind they rival USAA, and for a 27 year USAA member that is high praise indeed!

Thnx for the feedback RED...
....the only thing that throws me off so far w/ PENFED is their website GUI, wish it was more intuitive/user friendly as USAA's website is... but overall, not complaining of course, just nitpicking... I opened my PENFED acct: last Friday, and so far, impressed w/ their customer service and timely response/efficiency...

sorry, guys, not trying to change/hijack this thread, but since most of us are in a VDC status or rlease VDC status,(EXCEPT GADGETT: still inbound!)... i think were all in a wait and see pattern..... by next week we should start seeing/hearing who's gotten what....

Ha! I had the same experience; partially filled out the app online, chose to save it for later, and when I came back to finish it up, it was already approved! Almost makes me think that the application is a farce and that anyone who asks will be approved. Oh well, either way it's OK as long as I get my 4.75% loan

BTW, when I called to ask what's up with that, the lady I spoke with almost gave me the same feeling as the last time I called up one of those NYC electronics stores (like J&R or B&H)... the attitude was like - "yeah, it's approved. what's the interest rate - the one we had on the site. Sure, fuggetaboydit." (ha!)

I agree. I had a small problem the second time I applied, but I called CS and they completed my app for me over the phone!

I don't think they will loan to "anyone"; however, if the applicant meets their credit standards they do quickly process one's application. And I would imagine that the majority of people (like us) who are buying new Minis are fairly creditworthy. So our experiences are likely similar.

hey red... I was just noticing your signature....if u don't mind:

assuming your car is going to be a lady.... I think your home city: Alexandria is a very regal name for your car... I just think the PW color on a clubman just gives it a real 'classy' look....else, if stikcing w/ the GUY name: maybe ALEX???
just thought I'd throw ya a bone on the name.... still not 'feeling' this name process for a car, but just might buy into it once mine gets here....

HEY< GADGETT, do you have a name on your current MINI??...and/or intend to name your replacement MINI?...

My current MINI (male because he has a stick shifter ) didn't have an anthropomorphized name and was simply know as the "gadgeTTmobile." I haven't yet decided on a new name but am partial to Warner Bros characters. My first two dogs were "Wilma" and "Barney" (he was a tan cocker mix and she definitely wasn't a "Betty").

The new MINI is much more futuristic so a Flintstones reference won't do...

New MINI - I hereby dub you "Elroy".

So edjd - what have you named your new ride?

BTW, I wish there were a way to track my K-Line ship, but hopefully it will land next Friday. T-1 week until landing and then hopefully a much shorter wait to MINI of SA

FROM PENFED, DOES THAT JIVE w/ U?

Thank you for contacting Pentagon Federal Credit Union.

Unfortunately it is not possible to leave the amount of the loan check blank.
Once you have negotiated the final price of the vehicle, please let us know the amount to finance.

I had a feeling they were like that. How does one negotiate the final price 5 days before delivery so that a check can be printed and mailed to coincide with the delivery? We can't wait until the car is at the dealer, drive down to negotiate a final price, then go home (90 miles away) and wait 5 days for a check from PenFed, then drive 90 miles back to dealer to finish the paperwork and pick up the new car.

This might be a deal breaker versus doing the financing at the dealer at 0.5% higher rate....

I wonder if it's possible to have the check (and hence the financing) at a slightly higher round number. Then use that check to pay for the car and get the difference back in cash which can be submitted with the initial loan payment? Ex: I know that $35k will be more than I need but is in the ballpark. Get a check for $35k from PenFed. When at the table to buy the car, the final numbers might come in at $31k. If so, start the PenFed loan at $35k but make the first payment $4k more than necessary.

I just can't see being able to give PenFed the final number far enough in advance to have a pre-printed check (with amount filled in) on the day of pickup since the pickup day and the paperwork day are the same for me.

of course, trying to give mini of sa a chance to step and give me the final tally...so far like pulling teeth, they don't know how to read between line... guess they expect me to go into finance office and buy everything they offer...... not gonna happen...I NEVER BUY add'l stuff from FINANCE....

plus I inquired about 'free' mats to MA...and it's as if I never even asked...just overlooked by MA....

so being nice for a day or so...come MONDAY...I"ll make it clear that I expect full price/fees/tags/etc. so I can get my check from PENFED..... penfed also included some info. on costs for expedited mailing.etc..

The PenFed loan is at 4.75%. I also have an offer from SSFCU (where my current car loan is) for 5.25%. Presuming that SSFCU doesn't budge, my handy loan calculator says that paying the higher percentage will mean an extra $400 over the length of the loan. Given the hassle of getting a final number for PenFed before they'll send the check, it might be worth the $400 just to be able to walk into the dealer the day my MINI is ready and just sign on the dotted line....

How does everyone else who finances through PenFed do it? Do they negotiate everything a week before their MINI is ready so that they can have a check in-hand when the MINI arrives and is ready? Or do they go to the dealer after the car arrives, work the details, and then come back a week later with their PenFed check to sign and pick up the car? I can't wait that long!

If I knew my MINI would be ready tomorrow, I'd probably skip sleeping tonight and be on the road for San Antonio tomorrow morning so that I could be there when they unlock the doors. I'd be filling out the final paperwork while they're washing Elroy

I've never heard of having final numbers for this type of deal... typically the bank approves you for a max amount and issues a blank check. The dealer fills in the amount (up to the max) and you sign. Done. Loan for the amount written. It seems that PenFed starts the loan the day the check is issued, and that check is for the exact amount of the loan.
