My doctor just called me and said his son's Mini is having problems. I guess I'm the only one who they know with a Mini
His son has a 2003 Hardtop (non-S) and recently he was driving it and it just died in the middle of the road. It has power, and isn't the battery, it wasn't getting fuel. They took it to a local repair shop who does some work on British cars and they couldn't find an issue. They were able to start it and it died after about 20 minutes.
They put it on a trailer and had it taken up to Sharpe Mini in Grand Rapids (BTW thanks Sharpe for Mini on the Mack!). Sharpe said it's a fuel filter (and maybe pump too?) and they want to charge about $3,000 to fix it. MY doctor feels that's excessive as do my husband and I.
My husband said he believes the filter and pump are in the gas tank so therefore the the tank would have to be pulled, but we have no experience with Gen 1 cars.
Can anyone give any feedback on this? What do you all think? I understand labor costs and all but $3k seems excessive.

It is about a 1 hour job and maybe a $200 part...look at rockauto.com or a vendor like ecs?
Bet a vendor will post a link to the part....
$3000 is about the cost of a motor swap...not a fuel pump swap...it is accessed by moving up the rear seat, and removing a few screws...do a fuel filter while there...about another $50.
No fuel tank removal needed...even if it did...would not add $2500 to the cost..would be $100.
The pump and the filter do sit in the fuel tank. bur, there are cute little access panels under the rear seat so you don't have to actually remove the fuel tank.
Just did my filter. An hour or so. Fuel pump is similar...
That does seem a bit high. We have a great fuel pump and filter DIY here. Take a look at it as it goes over the process for replacement so you can get a better idea of what it looks like. If you're inclined, the process should also help with doing it yourself to help save a lot of money.
Oh so good to know. I just ordered a new fuel filter from Pelican and had no idea what was in store for me to do the job. Good to know there is no dropping the tank. I would have done it but wasn't looking forward to it.

My advice is to stay away from dealerships especially if you're out of warranty, there's little reason to do so as this thread shows you how Mini dealers operate. A LOT of Mini specialty independent shops are getting customer's tired of dealing with Mini dealerships antics.

Sad thing is the price is about 2x what a HPFP should cost at a dealer on a gen2 ...
But you can buy THAT pump for $300 now....
I have a funny feeling the dealer in question did not want to work on that car....
Let's face it...the dealer in Michigan likely never was open when the gen1 cars were sold...
And imports are/were kinda rare there when I lived there back around 2000.....likely they have done VERY little work on gen1 cars.....
The dealer doesn't know what is wrong with the car. They're guessing with the pump and filter and are quoting $3000 to hedge against further diagnostics and parts/labor.

Please ask that dealer to itemize his estimate.
Diagnosis / Labor hours and or dollars . / parts cost
As you can see in all the prior posts you will be sure to find some issues with their estimate
