Better brake pads? EBC green or Hawk HPS

I have to buy new brake pads soon! In the general opinion which are better?

Mostly road driving with tons of twisties. Occasional track days.... Wear time and dust levels would be a secondary concern... But most important which stop better and have better pedal feel???

Also, if anybody knows where the cheapest place is to buy the winner, it would also be helpful...

I have never used any other pad on a Mini other than OEM.

Thanks, Jasun

I can't speak for the Hawks', but the EBC Greens are no better than stock as far as stopping power goes. They do cut down on dust however...

Hawk HPS sounds like a good bet for your uses. I've been using them for the last two years. My only complaint with them is that if you dont re-bed them every couple of months, they start leaving pad deposits. At least that's what seems to be happening to me. I've heard others say similar things about other dual purpose brake pads though.

Wrong forum, should be in Tires, Wheels and Brakes.

I used the Greenstuffs for some time. They are so hard that they chewed up the EBC slotted rotors that I put on at the same time. I would not use them again. I am now using Mintex pads with Brembo OEM replacement rotors. So far I like this combination. I have never done a scientific brake test, so I'm not certain about performance other than butt accelerometer. I think the Mintex are smoother and faster stopping.

At AMVIV I saw a combination that Texas Speedworks uses, which I think is good and which I woud have tried had I not JUST put the Brembo/Mintex combination on. They use a rotor that is very hard carbon steel phosphorous coated to prevent corrosion and slotted in a unique "crescent" shape to vent gas. I thought it is ingenious. They use a pad that I was unfamiliar with, but which they swear by. Check them out.

I have heard good things about the Hawk as well.

I put the HPS on last spring, and I'm very pleased with them- hardly any dust, stop well, and no squeal. I'd buy them again. I did some pricing before purchase and raceshopper.com had the best price. Good price on Super Blue fluid, too.

I have both, but the GreenStuffs were put on before EBC changed its formula. These, I love, and have never had a problem with on the track or at the Dragon. I cannot talk about the other EBCs since they changed the formula, though....

I put the Hawk HPS pads on after my OEM pads wouldn't hold at Mid-Ohio. They were suggested by a NAM installer, as being great for street, twisties and occasional track use. We'll see, as I have a "date" at Putnam Park in the next few weeks before heading on to the Dragon. So far, though, they have been grrreat....

As priorly stated, wrong forum.

As to answer the question, I have the HPS pads and love them. Little dust, great stopping. Be aware however that they do not have the notch for the rear sensor, if that makes a difference to you. Have to be a little more on top of how soon you need pads.

Let us know what you think of them. I'm ready to get rid of the OEM dust busters...

I had the same experience - EBC pads and rotors and within 6 months, I needed new gear. Went to Akebono and Brembo rotors. I've run Hawk HPS with Brembo brakes and 2pc rotors and was quite impressed with their feel, power, dust and wear. Hard to beat and no downsides really.

I'm very happy with my Hawk HPS pads (and powerslot cryo rotors).
Huge reduction in amount, opacity, and tenacity of the brake dust,
good cold stopping power, better than stock warm stopping power, and
quiet to boot.

Same setup here. I have also had greens and mintex as well as OEM. My nod goes to the Hawks,

Hawk HPS all the way.
I put the Hawks on my car at the same time I put the Greens on my wifes (she didn't want the cold squeel)
They are very different. The Greens are the new ones and do dust much, much more than my Hawks.
Breaking is somewhat the same when cold but when hot, the Hawks seem to get sticker.
I have no noise at all
I haven't used any other kind but will buy the Hawks again.

I tried EBC green on my miata and it's just like your oem pads with lower dust. Haven't try HPS, but Hawks HP+ are great pads for track if you don't mind the heavy brake dust and squeaking noise.

I put EBC on mine during the Christmas break...in the last month I have developed a squeak that comes and goes at the left front only. What is causing this? My only guess is that the small spring catch is not tight.

That pad could be glazed.
Try some major braking to heat it up enough to burn it off.
Or you could take that pad off and use some sandpaper.
I'm sure someone here knows how to fix this minor issue

I had the same thing with my Greenstuffs. A few hard stops and that went away.

Wholeheartedly recommending Hawks HPS pads, not the ceramic version. They have little dust, and stopping power is enhanced by at least 30%, and never fade on spiritual street driving. Just that when cold, you need to pump them once or twice to heat it up.

Bought the Hawks today from Moss Mini. I will probably install tomorrow and flush and replace the fluid at the same time. I am hoping for a nice imrovement over the stock original pads, which are pretty worn and the original fluid, which is probably shot.
New rotors are next....

Any suggestions???? My buddy just got the new TSW's when he was at AMVIV. He used them out there at the track day and said they were sweet.

I havent seen them marketed or pics yet...

Thanks for all the feedback..

Jasun

if you're gonna bed them in ; run it up to 60 mph or so then brake hard to about 10 mph (do not come to stop ) and do this maybe 10 times . coming to a stop will trap debri and heat at that point on the rotor .

first: sorry if this seems a hi-jack but not trying to be...

second" I did the hard stop routine when I bedded them after the install. It was raining that day but it seemed to work well as I haven't had the squeaking until a two months after.

Could it be that I need to take it off, re-lube contact points and re-install?

I also added powerslot rotors to the front...pics in my gallery.

I'm surprised the Hawk Ceramics got a bad rap above. I installed them and they are fantastic.
