How Many Miles Left when Brake Wear Sensor is ON?
How Many Miles Left when Brake Wear Sensor is ON?
Hello guys,
Today, when I was driving down the fwy, my brake pad wear sensor came on. Do you guys think my remaining brake will be able to last until my next oil service, due in 1400 miles? I drive about 70 miles/day on fwy roundtrip for work. I hit traffic on the fwy so please consider that. It sounds dangerous, but just would like to hear some expertise from the members. Thanks!

You should be ok, though I'd go in closer to 400 than 1400 miles. IIRC the sensor comes on with 2mm of material left. In any case I'd call to get a service appointment - they can give you the party line then.
How many miles did it take you to get to the point the sensor came on? I wouldn't do any autocrosses until then...

My SA said you have about 1000 miles left once the indicator goes off. My stock rears (pads) lasted about 40,000mi and my fronts (pads and rotors) just got replaced under warranty at 50,000mi. That's misleading because I drive about 500 mi a week, 90% highway.

The light came on today at roughly 24k miles.
So mbcoops, you think my brakes will last until 1400 miles? I think i've read somewhere that I can schedule an oil service when my oil service indicator says I have <100 miles?
Reason why I want to wait is because I got other miscellaneous things to fix i.e. sunroof rattle, dash creak, "whistle" somewhere near my A-pillar/windshield at 90mph+.

I think it depends on how you drive - you can push some more life out of those pads if you downshift more, brake earlier and with less force, so on and so forth...
Your SA will probably have no problem with scheduling your service 100-150 miles before the ticker goes to zero. Then again, I've been surprised by what some SAs will and won't do. I'd have this conversation with him/her then decide what to do.
They're probably going to tell you your whistle is related to the alta intake eventhough it probably isn't if you're describing it as coming from the windshield/pillar.

I agree the life of brakes depends on the driver as much as the pad.
I changed my pads at 27k and had about half the pad left. Both front and rear were about the same ware. Unusual from past experience with cars, but what other have said here.

Wow - brake *****!
I'm at 37K and my brakes are just fine - and that includes a couple of track days! Then again, maybe I just drive too slow.

About my brakes wearing out so fast...I threshold brake all the time and drive fast, with stops from speeds in excess of highway limits regularly. When they wore out at 18k, my warrenty was gone. It expired due to time, my commute is just so short. A great brake set up is Powerslot Cryotempered rotors, Hawk Ceramic brake pads, Goodridge braided lines, and ATE super blue brake fluid. Incidentally this is what I have on my car, brake fade is gone, and braking is even and crisp at any speed, not to mention great pedel feel.
+1 on the Hawks - absolutely love them - my rotors (second set) are looking a little worn, next time I need brakes I had decided to go for the powerslots.
I tend to brake late and fairly hard, especially on track days
I have not had a great deal of issue with brake fade except on very warm track days even with stock fluid/pads/rotors. I guess I brake for less time, less often on every lap than the brake light and early drivers ?
