Dupli-color wheel paint

Has anyone tried the dupli color aersol wheel paint on their stock rims?
I was looking at their website which has great video clips on all their products. I wanted to paint my stock 17' s lites until I save some more dinero for aftermarket rims.

thanks-Mr. D

haven't tried their wheel paint, but dupli-color in general is high
quality paint. i wouldn't mind spot bonding up my used x-lites
that got some rimmage and spraying them down next summer.

I've got some that I was going to use, but never got around to it. I did have a friend that used the Duplicolor wheel paint on some wheels for his daily driver a couple of years ago. IIRC he scuffed up the original paint, then used two coats of the Duplicolor and a coat or two of their clearcoat on them. It held up pretty well for the year or two he used the wheels. It is more fragile than the original paint or getting them powdercoated, and you have to be a bit careful with what you use to clean them though (some of the harsher, acidic wheel cleaners can damage the paint).

The results can be great, but as with any painting, you determine your results with the prep-work, before you even spray the first coat of paint (this is even more true when using rattle-can paint).

I'd have the tires unmounted, and bead-blast the wheels if you can. If you can't have them blasted, I'd at least wash/de-grease them, and then wet-sand them with some 400-grit WetOrDry sandpaper until the entire wheel has a dull satin finish.

After the blasting or sanding, apply at least two coats of the color, heavy enough that the finish doesn't look "dry", but light enough that you don't get runs or sags in the nooks and crannies. Then follow it up with two coats of the clear, applied the same way. You can go a little heavier on the second clearcoat, since the still-tacky first coat will help keep the second coat from running, and the heavier second coat will "flow out" better and give you a smoother finish.
