As much as I have complained about runflat tires...

... they saved my butt today! My TPS went off yesterday, but since it was icy, I thought nothing of it, since it constantly goes off in snow and ice. Today, I noticed a strange sound while pulling in the driveway and I got out to check the tires. The right rear was completely out of air. I drove 40 miles on a pressure-less runflat at 75mph without even a hint of an issue.

I filled up the tire and it was seaping out at approximately 2psi every 15 minutes. I pulled off the tire and noticed a 1/2" piece of metal lodged in the tread. Unfortunately, no one carries a Dunlop 195/55R16 runflat so I had to have it plugged at a shady tire shop. I then drove another 40 miles on it back home.

I have to get a new one at the dealer on Monday, though.

EDIT: Anyone have 1 tire for sale, btw?

This might not fit your time frame, but I have 4 that I will be getting rid of within the month. The front ones are worn down, but the back are in very good shape.

I was just gonna toss them, but I'll keep you posted. I'm willing to give them away if you pay for shipping.

I know I'm in the minority, but I love my runflats! I was able to buy a second set for a song and am very happy with them.

I'm running the 16" Dunlop performance tires on silver V-spokes. And actually, I need an extra rim for my spare tire.

Glad to hear that you are safe and your runflats did exactly what they were supposed to do. In bad weather and heavy traffic the runflats are a very good thing when a flat occurs.

You can order a runflat from tirerack.com, give Alex a call early monday. Doesn't take long to ship and it's much cheaper than a dealer.

Tirerack doesn't have them in stock, unfortunately. How long does a special order through them take?

I thought you weren't suppose to go any faster than 55mph on an air depleted runflat ... ?

or was that just for the donuts?

My owners book sez to drive no more then 80 miles at 50MPH on a flat tire.

I'm having a similar experience right now. My front driver side tire is leaking about 15 psi per day. I'm gong in to a tire shop for a plugging on Monday.

BTW, does anyone have any experience with that flat tire fix stuff that comes in a can?

This stuff is definitely not runflat friendly. It shoots an ooze into the tire that is virtually impossible to remove. It can also clog up the stem. It is a last resort for a tire that is going to be tossed. Runflats can be patched if the damage is only in the tread, not the sidewall. The purpose of runflats is to allow you to get somewhere to repair or replace the tire, which is what that ooze does. So fix-it stuff serves no purpose with a runflat.

You aren't supposed to, but I didnt think anything was wrong. I'm really impressed by their performance.

Of course, that is a safe driving speed and distance, you can probably push these tires a lot more.

I was in a bit of a money crunch when I needed new tires, so I didn't buy runflats to replace my front tires. Then I got a slow leak in one of my back tires. Thought the tire pressure alarm was malfunctioning, the tre looked fine every time I looked at it. I wound up driving around for about 3 days on a nearly flat tire. That convinced me that they were well worth the price. Lucky for me, Sofia was in an accident (odd stroke of luck, eh?) and the repair shop is replacing the front tires with OEM tires (run-flats).

It's funny how the spirited drivers like me are more safety minded
which is probably exactly opposite of what the typical public thinks.

I can't see myself taking the runflats over 55mph...nor drive
on them any more than just going home within 30-40miles
knowing they are flat.

Maybe being more aware makes me more of a wimp?

In theory you can drive all the time w/o air in your runflats......that is if you like to stop every 80 miles in order to allow the tires to cool off.

Love my run flats, just bought some new ones to replace my (soon to be) treadless Dunlops. i know the ride is harsh, but to me, its worth the safety I feel.

I agree on the runflats. Like them, and the safety issue a lot. Don't forget though, if you put snow tires on, get you a little tire repair kit and a small air pump/compressor to get you out of a pinch (can of fix a flat is an option, but messy repair). I was out driving on my snowtires a couple weeks ago, and it just dawned on my. Quick trip to store just in case.

Well, I'm still driving on my damaged tire. MotorCity MINI refuses to call me back to setup a time. I may have to go there, buy the tire, and have it mounted somewhere else. I hate MCM.

I went to a Les Schwab tire place today and had my tire patched. It seems there was a screw that I picked up along the way.

The guys at the tire shop were all ooggling my MINI, and they didn't even charge me for the work!

Everything is fine and dandy now!
