"Plasti-Dip" on wheels?...

This subject must have come up but my search did not find any threads related to it.

Stock wheels on the 2018 JCW. Definitely not my favorites even though I really like the mounted Yokohamas Adan Sport A/S.

I can't spend the money on new wheels preferring as I have done on Pro Exhaust/AWE CAI/NM Power Module/ Cravenspeed Big Pair... so I am thinking using "Plasti-Dip".
Watched many videos and feel it is doable.

Anyone here has used it? And if so, even as not Plasti-Dip the lug nuts, how bad has it been destroyed when changing tires? I have not found a single info about if it can be re-applied if scratched or does one have to remove it all and re-start all over? Not a good scenario for sure if...

I've looked at it in the past and it didn't seem like something that would hold up over time. I've used it on other things and never really got a look that I liked. You might be better off buying some rattle cans of wheel spray paint and trying that.

Plasti Dip, No Problem!

Love my stock wheels, but wanted to have them in black. Thought about powder coating, but didn’t want to make a ‘permanent decision’ in case I prefer the original look again one day... so, Plasti Dip it was!

Did them in June, and I think they look great. Dipped the rims and lug nuts while wheels were still on the car. Just swapped out wheels for winters, and had NO problem with the lugs or any other part of the wheel peeling. I’d even picked up an extra can of Plasti Dip to touch up in case, but no need.

Have hung my summer wheels for the season, and in the spring will give them a good clean, and maybe a fresh coat of dip and glossifier, but I can report that I’ve been super pleased with the results.

I really appreciate your feedback and the photos.
I will probably go that route... Let's face it, it is peel-able!
That looks great...
Anything but the look of these stock wheels I have!... Of course it is all about taste...
Thanks again.

They do look good, but I can't wrap my head around the idea that you can take the nuts off without damaging them. Did you have to go up a size on socket to get the nuts on / off?

I can't answer this myself as I have not done it yet, but my thought is to actually mask the center. The black I will be using is "matte" so I don't know how the contrast will look but after talking with "Plasti-Dip" this morning, yes, if coated they will get somehow damaged. No doubt. As I think everyone rotates their wheels every 5K I think masking them would be beneficial. Now, changing tires! Hmmmm.... They also told me as I asked how to "fix" damages, over time the plastic is going to weather and fade a bit depending how much you drive the car and where it is stored. So, you get tires every? 30K? I am guess that would be the time to take it off and redo.

In my situation I have carports and drive the car maybe once or twice a week... [strictly mountain roads] so I don't expect much weathering. I am looking into if their is any protection available as for the car paint...

Hope that helps but we will wait to hear from someone, as above, who has actually done it.

They do have an after care kit which probably would be a good idea

Mine have been dipped for over a year. Still looks good. Even with tires being replaced and a couple of flat repairs too. Only had to do minor touch up.

I used to run plastidipped wheels on my Miata, the lugs would tear up the plastidip a little bit but it was not noticeable when the wheels were installed.

The plastidip will bake on as the wheels heat cycle, so if you leave it on long enough it effectively becomes paint after a few years.

A little off topic, but I'd love to hear / see more about how you have the wheels hung on the wall?

Wall mounted wheel hangers

Found these on Amazon:

FH-4WH Flush Wheel hangers set -...
Amazon Amazon

Simple to hang by mounting them into existing wall studs.
Seem to have no issue with weight of tires and rims. Also nice to save space in garage as I already store 2 other sets of wheels on rolling stackers...

I originally used plastidip to see if I would like the look and figured that if I did, I would strip and paint them when it started to peel or look like crap. But right now it still looks pretty good.

Not my MINI but....

Over a year and still looking great!

Wheels off. Note cards between tires and rims. 4-5 coats, 1/2 hour between coats. Careful to get around rim at bead. Remounted wheels. Wash when hand washing 4Runner. I did all the chrome emblems too(still on car) Love the look!

You can go to Harbor Freight and pick some screw in hangers for $10 or less for four of them.

I took my wheels off the car to do them, and I’ve had them on and off several times, as well as 4 new tires and a few flat repairs before that. Only one time I have had to do just a tiny bit of touch-up, even after having new tires installed it looked good still. Been about a year and a half now and they still look pretty good, I’m very surprised because I figured I would have needed to strip and actually paint them by now, but not yet!
If you tell the tech who is going to do your tire or tires that it’s dipped they can be a little careful and it’s fine!

I was very skeptical if using Plastidip but tried it finally on my mini wheels. Shot them about 2 months ago. Had them on and off about 3 times since and no scratches as of yet. Actually very impressed. They look great. Told my buddy, and when he inspected them he said he couldnt believe how good they turned out.
The only downfall I see is the texture. Kinda rubberyish.
Bought a kit on Amazon for $50 which included 4 cans of color, shiny clear, and a handle. Easy to spray, and very easy clean up.
def worth a shot.

I plasti-dipped my hood scoop and made a fake "JCW" grill on my MCS. I tried to match the color of my royal blue stripe (vinyl) and while it doesn't look perfect, I like the final outcome.
My wife saw it and did her hubcaps (on a Mazda 3). It's a little gaudier than I'd do, but I was very surprised at how well they turned out. It makes me want to do my wheels, but I'm not sure about the color.

That rubbery texture slowly gets better as time, and heat or whatever work on them. Mine don’t feel rubbery at all now. I would not recommend doing your door handles with it though..... it gets scuffed and scratched looking very quickly because you are constantly grabbing it.
But it works really well for blacking out emblems too

My wheels are pretty beat, so I dedicated them to winter duty and dipped them white. The key is to get them super clean and then use a TON of spray. At least one can per wheel.

Naw, I just paint over the last color. Freehand it right on the car...5 minutes a wheel! yee-haw! I don't even mask.
1 can Black plastidip
1 can Silver Blasted Rustoleum Peel
1 can Duplicolor hologram
What look do you want today? They make you buy way too much plastidip in those kits. It doesn't take that much to cover. It's peel off stuff just do it again. New color can be had every day. . Let the graffiti artist in you come out.
