I need a how-to for rear brake pad changing....

I've searched the net and couldn't find a how to that targets replacing the pads on the REAR of the car. Everything I've seens shows fronts. I've heard the rear is MUCH more tricky than the fronts.

(The guy who was going to be helping me today, can't do it because they have to work. So I need a solid how-to, so I can get it done. )

It's the same premise as the front, with a few twists;

*You'll need a C-clamp to compress the piston into the cylinder. The method is the piston needs to be rotated like a screw into the cylinder.

*The pad that goes on the piston side of the caliper must be "latched on" using the wire frame of the back of the pad. The pad will snap onto the piston itself, and to do so you must slide it on from the side, aligning the wires to the piston groove.

Everything else is the same deal; i.e. caliper bolts, & anti-rattle clip.

Cheers,
Ryan

Thanks for the 411. What size of C-Clamp is required?

I use a 6". Mostly because that's what I happen to have. A smaller (maybe 4"?) might work but the pad on the 6" is large enough in diameter to allow me to grasp it with channel locks to rotate the piston without having to grab onto the piston itself.

A 6" is what my neighbor had. It went fairly quick once I figured out how to compress the piston PRIOR to removing the piston housing piece from the rotor. Test drove the car and NO squeals or squeeks from the EBC Green Pads! Whoo Hoo!

i found that trying to turn the piston while compressing it almost impossible without hurting the rubber boot. i've started using a new method.

with the calliper nicely resting on the ground i put a bar behind the calliper then my heels on the other side of the bar.

now i can push the piston while holding it in place with my heels.

to push and turn the piston i use a halfway open pair of needle nose pliers. on the inside of the piston there are two dimples which the tips of the needle nose pliers fit.

now holding the calliper in place with my heels i push and turn with the needle nose.

hope that works for someone in need.

I have heard this to be a big job... not like a normal pad change... I really want to get rid of the stock pads due to the dust, but I dont think I want to take on a big project for that. Anyone have any pictures of the pad install?!?!? That would be interesting to see the inside of the caliper.

Guys, it's not that tough Just rotate the piston while you compress it - a bit awkward, but not difficult!
