I'm running those size tires and recently had my first track session with them. See below for mods. Since I haven't used 215/45/17s I can't compare the difference. I have no issues with the 40s

I run this with the Goodyear Eagle F1's. I previously ran 45 Series with Yoko AVS ES100's.

The Goodyear is a FAR superior tire to the Yoko so that's no comparison.

Technically, you are over your weight limit on a 215 40 but I've never had a problem nor has anyone else I've known.

Cheers!

I just had 215/45/17's installed. There was definitely a noticeable improvement over the Pirelli run flats, but I'm still adjusting to the ride.

Yes, with Proxes T1s on 17" Team Dynamics wheels.

No problems.

I think 16 inch wheels make more sense in spite of what I have done.

Take a look at the sidewalls on an F1 car. Yes, I know, they specified by the FIA. But they get fair to decent handling from tall sidewalls. Maybe even better than fair to decent.

Look at the WIDTH of the tires on an F1 car....

I ran 215/40/17 Continentals on OZ Choron Evos without issue, through fall, winter & spring. Bad roads, potholes, you name it. No issues, no bent rims & no flats.

Jim convinced me about the GY's and I had to try it for myself on my MCS.

I think i might do the GS-D3's on my rex too next.

what's the real difference between the 215/45's and the 215/40's? Just a spot of width?

Will both fit on stock s-lites?

Yes, either will fit the wheels. The difference is in the height, not the width. They are both the same width. Go to Tirerack for a better explanation of the specifications than I could give you. It's really pretty simple, though.
