8in wide in the front and 9in wide in the rear?

i will be one the first or the first, to find out how wide of a wheel you can put on a mini, on the this forum. now the non u.s. countrys have done this, japan, and most of europe but has anyone do this over here. i am putting 17in wheels all way round, 8in wide in front with a 30mm offset and a 9in wide wheel with a 25mm offset. now the tires i am going to be running are 205/40/17 in front on the 8 and 215/40/17 on the 9, so some tire strectching is going occur. now this isnt going to be a race car or anything mainly a show/drive car and i know most of you will ask why i am doing this? why make the rear wheels wider?? why....you ask the stance, the car is to dam good looking to have 7in wide wheels on it. now this is pretty much what it going to look like except i am putting 17's instead of 16in and i am putting a bbs mesh style wheel instead of the 5 spoke.

this car is from japan, dam good looking. if anyone has any thoughts about this PLEASE REPLY. thanks wheels are going to be here in a couple of weeks. heres some pics of the wheels i am doing.

Have fun

Boys and girls -don't try this at home

I'm sure you've thought about this. I'm sure you like the look.

I for one am not a fan of that look. I think it would be much much better with 17x8" rims with more like a 38 or 40mm offset (front and rear) but that will vary with the rims you choose. The 17x9" rims in the rear don't match, it's one thing of the tires fit and you get wider wheel arches but stretching tires on an overly wide rim isn't top on my list. I wonder what that does for wear on your tires and on roughness of the ride?

We have already discussed in a previous thread why you don't want to have a FWD MINI with smaller wheels in the front and truely wider wheels in the rear. The drive wheels are the front so they do all the work, while the rear wheels are being passively rolled/dragged behind. It would be different with all wheel drive or rear wheel drive. Alex@tirerack helped us come to the conclusion that it was a bad idea.

This doesn't mean that you cannot do what you have set out to do but I would talk to someone who knows tires and wheels professionally when you are doing something so extreme. Alex@tirerack knows MINIs and would be a good person to contact.

Good luck and stay safe.

Expanding on minihune's comments, one of the main handling reasons NOT to do this is because wider tires in the rear will usually induce understeer. Many MINI owners spend a good bit of time and money on aftermarket sway bars to get rid of understeer...

The whole idea of running wider wheels is to run wider tires....so why are you sticking with a 215 size? And running a staggered setup on the MINI will look a bit out of place being a FWD car. If you're going to run wider wheels, get a bodykit and run fat tires all around....

Better yet, stick with the wheel plan, and do a RWD conversion.

You may be one of the first to put a wide "wheel" on, but you are defeating the purpose of wider wheels by putting a "tire" on that is too small. To me, it makes little to no sense, but whatever......

If you put on a wide wheel, put on the appropriate tire...even if you open up the fender. Otherwise....what is the purpose?????

why, why not

yes i have thought about this a lot, believe me, i have looked into this a lot, i understand that putting wider wheels on a FWD will creat more understeer, but i am not racing or going to be doing high speed turns, its a cruiser car. if i was going for a car to smash around cars then i would do the same size wheel and tires all way round but the amount of wheels i have done on most of my cars that i have built i have wanted to the wider wheels in the rear after i get wheels on the dam things. the cars need wide wheels no matter what anyone says , i think. once the wheels are on the car then i will tell you guys how it goes. you have to understand i am 20, so the look to me is awesome. thanks for the replies.

thanks

chris

You do realize that it's the fat tires with the bigger wheels that gives you the look, right? If you're going to go staggered on the MINI, run 225's or 235's on the back.

you dont understand. stretched tires, thats the key that i am going for, the tire would look like . that is not what i am going for that is what you do on a lifted 4x4. putting a 7in wide tire on a 8in wide wheel and a 8in wide tire on a 9in wheel is what i want. that is why you guys dont understand what i am going for. see the red mini, that is what i want. here, thats a stretched tire

I'd be interested to hear what Alex from Tire Rack has to say about "stretched tires".

you have to remember that most tires arent design to be stretched. dunlop, bridgestone, and toyo's are tire that can be stretched.

No prob, you've made your point clear with the pics....just watch out for curbing those rims.

Will you be lowering the car as well?

D6, This whole thread is a joke right? If you are really serious I hope you post pictures! (and have your affairs in order). I like a deep dish look but you can find this in some nice 7 and 7.5 wide wheels

accually this tread isnt a joke, its true. i will have the wheels here in about 2 weeks. mounting potenza s-03' on them. yes i will be watching out for curbs. the front wheels will be flush or sticking out a little on the front and the rear hope to god will slick out a lot more then the front. pretty much how the red one is. those are 30mm on the front with a 8 and the rears on that red one are 9 with a 30, i am doing a 25mm ofset. so my rear will stick out about 10mm more. thanks for understanding guys.

i should have my h&r coil overs a little after my wheels, just have to pay them off first. or i might do my wiechers sport full polished aluminum roll bar instead. depends on how the car sits on the wheels

Well hurry up and post pictures so we can laugh at your totally useless and cartoon-looking wheel/tire combo
