Tire Help Needed
Tire Help Needed
My 2009 MINI Cooper S with 17" wheels and Dunlop 205/45 R17 run flats needs new tires after 29K miles. I am contemplating a non run flat all season radial as I spend my winters in snowy Ohio where my run flats were crippled in even a couple inches of snow. I was considering Goodyear Eagle GT's? Will non run flats work well on my MINI rims? Will there be an issue with tire sensors? Do you have better suggestions?
A/S tires
I would recommend to go to tire rack.com and look at tires and the comparison.
I chose the Kumho 4X they offer good all around performance for the price.
Look at my signature for the type of tires.
Take time and check out my gallery also.
I think they are offered in your size also. They have good ratings across the board.
Other members have them on their MINI's and are very happy with them and the ride improvement is unbelievable.
If you do not have a spare then get a tire plug kit and a compressor and carry it with you. That is what I chose to do.

Before I moved here from Ohio I sold my steelies with winter tires (I was in the snow-belt in Northeast Ohio). I think you should go with something you like and get a set of winter tires. There are a bunch of rim sets on craigslist around (Charlotte / Raleigh / Winston-Salem) that would make a good start towards the winter tires that you can use in OH --- IO.

Get a winter beater. I think it is mandatory in the snow belt. I was a little south in Akron.
Snow and chuckholes are killer.

i live in socal where snow isn't an issue, so i have the continental extreme contact dw (dry/wet). put them on about 750 miles ago and have been pretty happy thus far. the dws (dry/wet/snow) version of the tires have been spoken pretty highly of on NAM, and for all types of conditions. they're relatively affordable (~$125 per corner) and come in a variety of sizes. i run the 215/45/17 on my rota RBs that are 17x7.5.
Nothing special about run flats as far as mounting is concerned so your wheels are fine. The sensor is a separate piece as well and will function as designed.
The only thing you are going to need to be concerned with are the cops as you push the car harder with better tires.
I'm running Potenza GRID 019s They are nice, but getting a little noisy as they age. That being said, I haven't had a tire that didn't do this.

Eagle GT's aren't so great in the snow. I'd also recommend the Kumho 4X...there's even a rebate on them now.
I'd also recommend the the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus, which I have on my other car, but are a bit pricey. Conti DWS is a good choice as usual.

I just switched out my RFT to the Kumho EScta 4x and I like them a lot. I will have set of snow tires for the winter for safety as I do with all my car. Mostly for braking safety in the snow. I will test the Kumho with the first snow fall and I'm sure it will do the job on the Mini's front wheel drive.
The switch from RFT is a huge different in comfort and handling. I have a clubman so I will get a spare since there is a spare compartment in the boot.
I would recommend you get snow tire set no matter what tires you decided since you are in the snow belt.
