Does anyone know the current best (lightest and best off set) choice for a 6.5 X 16 autocross (Sololl) wheel for a MCS.

Also does anyone know of any new candidates that now being designed, and that will be available in the spring.

We're working with a company in Daytona to bring a set of 16's to market that will work with the MCS as well as all the currently offered brake upgrades for the MCS. I should be hearing from them this week on their schedule and hope to have a set on the car by December 13th.

I think the lightest are the Tire Rack's SSR Comps.

Something like 11 lb. each.

Wheel options really depend on what class you intend to run. If you run a stock Solo 2 class like G Stock (MCS) then you have to run a wheel that is 16 or 17 inch having offsets within +/- 0.25 inch of a OEM wheel. In the case of the MCS the likely best route is to run a 16 size due its lower weight. As mentioned above Tire Rack has worked with SSR to create a stock offset version of their 16 wheel that is currently one (if not the) lightest wheels out there. Click HERE to visit the Tire Rack site for more information. Also, be sure to visit the thread above for more info on the SSRs. I've had several sets of SSRs over the years and they are a great wheel.

If you plan to run something like STX or Street Mod (SM) you can choose pretty much any wheel you want. When we ran STX we actually went to a very lightweight 15" wheel...the Enkei RPF-1 which weighed in at only 9.6lbs each. With this and the improved gearing we gained by tire size change the car would really give you a good push in the back under throttle...pretty much anywhere in the throttle range. The downside was running this car lowered plus the wheels resulted in front bumper scraping pretty much anywhere we drove on the street...that said it looked great

Hope this helps.

You didn't mention budget but the lightest and best is gonna cost some $$$. The smallest standard
SSR comp us 16x7 and comes in a variety of finishes, weighs a little more than 11 pounds, has a polished lip and centercaps but costs more. Late this summer the SSR comp R became available. et 44mm $299 each
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...amp;topic=2442

Talk to Alex@tirerack for the best tires to match the SSR Comp R 16x6.5 (no polished lip and no centercap, finish only in silver) Rough cost about $1700+ shipped for the set, depends on which tire. For Autocross some like Hoosiers but they cost alot.

For those on a budget from Webbmotorsport there are the:
Performance Wheel/Tire Package
4 Monza 16x6.5" wheels with 4 215/45-16 Falken Azenis tires, mounted and balanced, all hardware included. [Falken Azenis] Price: $1050 silver, $1090 white

AK Tire Monza 16" Wheels
This wheel is a strong and light 16x6.5" 44mm offset, which makes it legal for any stock class in SCCA or BMWCCA. The Monza weighs a mere 13.9 lbs, and the open spoke design assists with brake cooling. Avaialble in silver and white. [Silver] [White] Price: $155 silver, $165 white

Ok, hope this gets read. down here on the bottom of the thread!

1. Does tirereack sell Falken Azenis? If not what options does the tirerack carry in the same price/performance range?

2. I need an autocross wheel tire package that is under $1000, I like the wheel tire combination that is suggested above, any other ideas for the same price? I would be interested in staying in GS, or moving to STS or STX?

3. How can 215/45-16s be fitted on stock wheels? Seems a bit wide when the stock is 195, and the recomended wheel width for this tire is 7" at it's lowest.

4. What is legal for GS? STS?

In answer to

1.) No, Tirerack does not carry Falkens. Alex really really likes the Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions. I've got them on my COOP, and I love them. I'm not sure what others would say about using them for AutoX, but they are great (if pricey) tires. A more budget-minded tire would be the Yokos that Tirerack carries.

2.) To keep it under $1000, you could get Kosei K-1s with Yokos. That would be a nice, fairly lightweight package for cheap, but I'm afraid that the 16x7.5 size (although the offset is really close to stock) will still bump you into STX at the very least. But I'm not sure.

3.) I think that 205/50s are possible stock size also, but I'm not sure. There is a list somewhere on here of all the allowable stock sizes, and there are literally dozens (depending on 15,16 or 17 wheels) that are technically "stock" if I am recalling correctly. But you'll need someone with the Searchin' Skillz of Minihune to find that list!

4.) I have absolutely no idea! For GS it's pretty much 16 or 17 by 6.5, with near stock offset, I think.

And while we're asking AutoX wheel-related questions:

5). What class am I going to be dumped into for running the Kosei Racing 16x7.5 wheels? (with 205 tires)

My answers:
1. If you're looking for a cheap autox tire and you want to work with only The Tire Rack, than try the Kumho MX (for STS/STX) or the Kumho Escta 700 (for GS). The MX won STS this year at Nationals.

2. Staying in GS and spending under a grand will be tough. Pick up a set of stock rims from the marketplace or classifieds and then get the Kumhos. Most people are dumping their rims for prices cheaper than aftermarket rims.
If you'er moving to a street tire class, go with a set of 15"/16" wheels (beware of radical offsets) and tire from R-Speed. They've got some nice Rotas with Falkens that will serve you all year.

3. The tires will fit but they'll begin to flex the side walls. It's not recommended because of the geometry will result in the carcass moving side to side. 205 is probably the widest you'll want to go on a 6.5" wheel.

4. Legal for GS: Stock (from the factory) sized width and diameter with an offset of +/- 0.25" (+/- 6 mm since offset is rarely expressed as inches.) This means 15x5.5, 16x6.5, 17x7.
Legal for STS: Wheels may have any diameter with a max width of 7.5". Tires must have a wear rating of 140 or greater and have a maximum width of 225.
Legal for STX: Any diameter with a max width of 8". Tire wear rating of >=140 and width <=245.

5. If the tire meets the above critera (non R-compound), you're in STS/STX depending on whether you're an MC or MCS, respectively. They might let you run novice if you're new to the sport. You could argue that your street tires are 3 seconds slower than what everyone else is running in HS/GS. Overall your time won't be different regardless of the class, so don't let the classification stop you.
If the tire is an R-compound (Hoosier, Corsa, Advan, etc.), you're into Street Prepared. It's a tough jump but that's what rules are for.

Legal for GS. Can be used as a street / track tire if you don't want dedicated R compound track tires.

Thanks for the info. Where is a good source for the Falkens?

Opinions on aftermarket wheels and Azenis vs set of stock wheels and a comp tire? How much difference between Azenis and an R compound

Believe it or not Big O now carries them. If you buy them there they will rotate and balance them free. Same with Americas Tire Company.

Vulcan Tires is a good source for Falkens. google it

I'm assuming you have an S. If you are looking to autocross then you should decide first whether you're going to run Stock (GS), Street Touring (STX), street prepared (DSP), or street modified. If you're new to autox I recommend you run stock the first year. If you must mod your car look at STX (but you can't run a pulley and other things). If you want to mod your car and run r compounds look at DSP. If you must have that pulley look at SM

The classes determine what you can do to the car. If you are running Stock then the aftermarket wheel choices as detailed above are limited to SSR Comps in 16/6.5 and the SSP NZO 16/6.5. The SSRs are lighter and more $. In stock class you can run R Compund tires. These run $100 to $180 each depending on the brand and will not last long at all if run on the street.

On a 60 sec Autox course the difference between a street tire (Falken) and an R Compund is approx 2 seconds (everthing else being equal)

Unfortunately I cannot find a single true autocross tire in 205/50 16 at TireRack. The S03 is a high perf tire, but IMO too expensive to tear up at the autox. Maybe I'll have to go to 205/45.

If you want to run street tires, then look into 215/45/16 Falken Azenis. $98 each from Vulcan Tire.

If you want to run R compounds, check out 215/40/16 Hoosiers. $180 each from the Tire Rack. I know, more $ than the S03.

Please talk to Alex before you order over the web. I realize it's old fashion to actually talk to a real live person but he will be able to get you the right tire for the best money. I've gotten free shipping on more than one occasion because I let my fingers do the walking instead of letting my fingers do the typing.
