Tire Pressure Question
Howdy!
I'm at about 1100 miles on my MCS. The CD I got with the car suggests checking the tire pressure every 2 weeks. I am wondering if that is necessary with the tire pressure alert that the MINI gives you. I am also worried that by checking my pressure I could throw it off a bit and make things worse. So I ask - do you check your tire pressure regularly or do you wait for the light to pop on before adding air to the tires?
Thanks,
~Steve~

Couple of things come to mind on tire pressure.... seasonal temperature changes will impact the tire pressure. From cold to hot a typical tire may change by 4psi. Check your tires cold with a good, accurate tire pressure gauge and adjust your cold inflation pressure from summer to fall to winter etc.. as your ambient conditions change. Riding on EMT (runflat tires) is a stiff ride (tires are hard to mount) - there should be no issues with rim slip per se which may induce balance problems, but might result in slight air loss - but regardless over time you may see a slight loss in air pressure. Rule of thumb is minimum of once per month you should check and reset your tire pressures. This should account for any long term air loss and handle seasonal ambient temperature needs.... The manual will tell you how to reset your warning system after you set your air pressures. When I lived in OK I actually had my warning system come on when the temperatures dropped suddenly from 70-80 degress to 30 degrees for several days and one of my tires was a little below normal cold pressure as well.
IMHO two weeks is a bit of overkill

from my experience, its about 1psi for 10F of change. its also good to check
in the morning before you take the car out, and to check at least once every 2 weeks.
the dab of air you loose while checking the pressure is no big deal.

I check weekly - 10 minutes before you leave to check cold pressures is much more advantageous than a roadside inconvience!
10 F - 1 psi
1 psi is lost every month due to heat cycles!
tires are really just airbags - the air does all the work!
Check often

I check my tire pressure about once a month. I would like to do it a little more, but usually don't get around to it more than that. Do not go by your tire indicator light. This is nothing more than a "dummy light" to let us know if something is seriously wrong. A friend of mine thought that he would just wait until he saw the light and when I checked his pressure, they were all at 24 psi. Not a good thing! The light never came on.
In fact, just two weeks ago, I had a blow out on the highway and I had to ride on the rim for about 1/4 mile. My tire indicator light NEVER came on. Goes to show you how accurate this signal can be.

Buy a good air pressure gauge, one with a release button and a hose. Store it in your MINI. On the 1st and 15th of each month, check pressure. Simple.

For different circumstances it still doesn't matter. Do what the Owner's Manual says. (Although I always inflate the tires with extra 2-3 pounds when I'm going to go on highway trips. The tires won't heat up as much. This will help them last longer. Also you will get better gas mileage).
