Dangerous Flame Spoke wheels?
Maybe this has been posted before..
Found this on Usenet. A guy claiming that a "rock shredded" his stock MINI flame spoke wheels. Here are the pictures:

While working as a consultant having fired various caliber rounds into wheels/tires before, including the 44 Magnum.....( Was done under a controlled environment while perfoming testing and evaluation of the effects of certain rounds on car's tires/rims ).... I would love to see what other damage ocuured to the mini's strut towers and suspension components.......odd no other pics of the rim on the car.
If I was handling that claim where I work (State Farm), I'd tell that guy it's no Comp claim (no rock caused that damage). Sorry, that's a Collision claim. You ran over something that punctured your tire AND your wheel. Collision claim in single-car accident = At Fault.

IF it *was* a rock, pretty clear that the tire was severely underinflated...
But that looks almost like security gate tire shredder damage (or something similar) to me...
Could've ? Yeah... a flying object going fast enough to fly through the tire and the wheel. It could happen.
That guy is an idiot... just read his comment he posted. I think it's the driver who is not safe, not the MINI.
Yeah, could be a security gate or some other hard, sharp object. Who knows what that dummy ran over.
The ONLY way this could be true is if the wheel manufacturer screwed up big time on mixing the alloy properly or something. But even then, I'm pretty sure all these rims have to go through some kind of quality control to make sure they're safe.
Looks like a leaf spring could have caused the damage. I ran over a leaf spring on the interstate many years ago - went through the floor and ended up sticking half way out the roof.
Missed me by about a foot.

Although I think this is a bunch of bunk I am thinking of a way he could be telling the truth.
So lets say a rock got under the car hit on the metal of the wheel that is uncovered by the wheel. It hit the wheel hard and weakened the alloy allowed the air pressure to blow that hole out. That would explain the direction of the "wound." Does this make any sense?
Still think that is not probable but it is the only way that makes sense to me if a rock is to blame.
